Support Bristol music today: Bandcamp waive seller fees

Posted on: 05 Jun 2020

The online music retailer has waived its administration today, Friday 5 June.

Want to support Bristol musicians during these uncertain times?

You might want to purchase that new album, track or record on Bandcamp today, Friday 5 June.

Why? Well, Bandcamp is once again waiving its administration fees, meaning all proceeds from sales will go directly to artists and labels.

Usually, Bandcamp collects 15% of sales from digital music and 10% from physical goods.

However, following the success of the site’s first fee-waiver on 20 March, which saw users spend over $4 million in a day of record sales, Bandcamp is now repeating the initiative for a third time.

The waiver aims to support independent artists and labels, many of whom are facing severe economic consequences of the coronavirus pandemic.

The fee waiver will last until 23:59 today, Friday 5 June. The waiver will also occur again, for the last time, on Friday 3 July.

This time around, many artists, labels and producers across the world are redirecting profits to Black Lives Matters organisations, bail funds and anti-racism projects, in response to the death of George Floyd in the U.S., and the mass protests that have followed.

Some local artists redirecting their profits include Bristol-based electronic producer Finlay Shakespeare, who is donating profits to the ACLU

Elsewhere, 1020 Radio has created a handy round-up of station residents with Bandcamp pages you can support.

Some local record labels and artists you could also support today include Saffron Records (the label behind DJ workshop series Mix Nights), and Batu's label Timedance.
