Bristol City players return to training in small groups

Manager Lee Johnson had his players back in training yesterday as the EFL looks to resume the Championship season.

Bristol City players returned to training yesterday under strict EFL safety protocols, taking part in light exercises and getting back on the pitch for the first time in more than two months.

Players and coaching staff have, until now, been following fitness programmes from home during lockdown, unable to train together or play competitively since their last match against Fulham on 7 March.

With the EFL Championship season expected to continue some time in the coming weeks, clubs across the country have resumed training in small groups to return players to full match fitness.

Speaking to the Bristol City media team, Robins boss Lee Johnson said he was "absolutely buzzing" to be back in action, as he continues to plan sessions in line with new safety criteria.

"It was great to see everyone, and you do miss them," he explained. "They're like the kids: young, vibrant, athletic, committed and they are a team. That’s something you all want to be a part of is the camaraderie that comes in a team environment.

“They have been excellent off the pitch in this spell: they have maintained their fitness, their mood at a high level and we have been able to implement things we wouldn’t have been able to with the hustle and bustle of the Championship being Saturday-Tuesday."

Monday's training session consisted of five groups in total, including three groups of five and two groups of three. "The social distancing element isn't easy," Johnson added, "but it's important we stay clean and concentrate on protocol."
