The local filmmaker, writer and director got the National Film & Television School nod for his short film, Hollow, released in 2019.

Entering the competition for the first time, Holbrook took The Pitch Award, making a big impression on the five industry judges with his stirring short film set on an council estate in South Bristol.

The dark thriller tells the story of a grieving mother seeking revenge against a man who killed her son in a drink-driving incident. Struggling to find the strength to confront her son's killer, she seeks guidance from a local vicar, himself tormented by racial abuse.

Told with genuine passion and an emotive storyline, Hollow was recognised for its cinematic vision and authenticity.

Holbrook believes that his attachment to the project has played a part in its success, and that he sees a lot of himself in the story and the issues facing the characters.

Speaking on his award win, he said: "This is such a huge reassurance and motivator and big confidence boost for sure and that a professional organisation has faith in me. Due to the support I've felt part of something bigger than making films."

As part of the award, Paul Holbrook has been granted a cash production budget of £30,000 as well as added production support to deliver his next project.

He's also been given the chance to travel to Hollywood to meet with a selection of industry professionals for feedback and advice.
