Bristol Club Highlights - May 2019

Bristol Club Highlights - May 2019

Posted on: 01 May 2019

It'd be stupid of us not to shine a light on the best of Bristol's bustling nightlife scene, and so with the Club Highlights series we'll be providing you with a monthly list of the best club nights in the city, taking into account some of the best-known acts and venues as well as some you might never have heard of. We're not quite sure where to start this month as Bristol clubs prepare to welcome the likes of Pangaea, the Outlook Festival crew, DJ Stingray, Helena Hauff and many more through their doors in May. Find all the info below.

Helena Hauff at The Black Swan // Friday 3rd May

Disco Afrique @ The Love Inn, Wednesday 1st May

Who doesn't love a little midweek knee's up? The Love Inn do them better than anyone else in Bristol, and they're kicking off a huge month of Bristol parties with a night of world music groovers in collaboration with Deep Fried Funk. Combining the best beats from across the African continent with upbeat disco and jazz, you'll be left in the capable hands of Shim, Reece Jordan and Area Boys from 10pm-2am.

Helena Hauff @ The Black Swan, Friday 3rd May SOLD OUT

The good people at Crack Magazine are celebrating the release of their 100th issue in May, and they're marking the occasion in trademark style by inviting the one and only Helena Hauff to play The Black Swan this Friday. They were always going to pull out all the stops for this one, and the all-conquering German DJ and producer certainly fits the bill. Rooted firmly at the forefront of the international electronic music scene right now, Hauff's no-nonsense techno sets have melted minds at festivals and clubs around the world, and we can't wait for her return to Bristol - tickets, predictably, sold out pretty quickly but keep your eyes on the RA and Crack resale sites for any going spare.

Musu x Colours w/Nicolas Lutz & Ivan Smagghe, Friday 3rd May

Known for their programming expertise and encouragement of far-reaching extended sets, Bristol party starters Musu have teamed up with Colours to bring you two of the most exciting DJs on the scene right now for an eight-hour odyssey on the outskirts of the city. In-demand Uruguayan selector Nicolas Lutz and genre-spanning Frenchman Ivan Smagghe top the bill for this one, backed up by Motion resident and established Bristol DJ Ellie Stokes. The venue - a fully-soundproofed film and photography studio - is slightly out of the way in BS4, but offers a chance to switch up your routine and get down in a brand-new setting. Take a 360-degree tour of Band Studios here.

Boiler Room Bristol at Motion // Friday 10th May

Open Air Club w/Joseph Capriati, Eats Everything, Heidi + more @ Motion, Saturday 4th May

Motion's 2019 Open Air Club series kicks off this month, opening with an absolute cracker that will see internationally-renowned Italian export Joseph Capriati headline, with homegrown hero Eats Everything, veteran DJ Heidi, Kettama, Gianni Callipari and trusted Motion residents Ellie Stokes and Ellis Roberts on warm-up duties. Capriati's wealth of musical knowledge and vast experience of playing to crowds of thousands have made him one of the world's most in-demand DJs today, and Motion's Container Yard, Crane Yard and Lock Yard spaces should provide the perfect backdrop for his far-reaching sound. Tickets for this one are running low with just days to go, so book yours ASAP to avoid missing out.

That Garden Party Thing w/Addison Groove @ Secret Location, Sunday 5th May

Relatively new to the Bristol party scene but already making serious waves having hosted two huge parties in the Bearpit, That Thing (not the clothes shop) aren't showing any signs of slowing down this month, inviting Russia's A.Fruit, celebrated UK producer and born and bred Bristolian Addison Groove and a slew of artists from across the country to a secret location for a Sunday afternoon get together. Expect jungle, juke, ghettotech and much more from this one, and relish in the opportunity to party with a real sense of goodwill, with all profits going towards helping Bristol's homeless population.

Outlook Festival Launch Party @ Lakota, Friday 10th May

We were hit by the sad news a few weeks back that the much-loved Dimensions and Outlook Festivals would be taking place in the famous Fort Punta Christo in Pula, Croatia for the last time this year. Anyone that's been to either festival - which have run one after the other in late August every year since 2011 - will know how special the current setting is, so it's essential that the organisers and punters give it a send off to remember this summer before they relocate to a new home. Outlook may well not be on for other three-and-a-half months, but the team have collaborated with Wide Eyes and Rhythm Rollers to put together a huge lineup for the official launch party at Lakota. Expect non-stop heavy hitters all night long from the likes of DJ Bryan Gee, DJ Grooverider, DJ Hatcha and more.

ALFOS at The Boxing Club // Saturday 11th May

Boiler Room Bristol @ Motion, Friday 10th May SOLD OUT

Boiler Room are sat very comfortably at the top of the pile when it comes to the UK's electronic music scene at the moment, enjoying years of success since starting out filming parties in and around London. Their innovation when it comes to running events and championing of up-and-coming British talent to headline them is not to be sniffed at, and their latest party series takes the label around the country to towns and cities often ignored by big names. They've enlisted the services of some of Bristol's most exciting underground artists for this one, with Om Unit, Sherelle, Bruce, Danielle and more locked in. Tickets, as expected, moved pretty quickly but you can sign up to be notified when any become available on the resale here.

Club Blanco w/A Love From Outer Space @ The Boxing Club, Saturday 11th May

Andrew Weatherall and Sean Johnston's A Love From Outer Space project has seen them play sets at some of the world's best-loved festivals and on the most revered dancefloors, and Club Blanco have done the business to bring them to Bristol this month for an intimate, 300-capacity party at The Boxing Club in St Paul's. If you've seen a set from ALFOS before you know exactly how big of a deal this is, and if not, we thoroughly recommend you get to know.

Room 237 w/DJ Stingray @ The Loco Klub, Sunday 26th May

Detroit electro don DJ Stingray is back in Bristol for the second time in as many years this month, ready to bring his uncompromising sound to the underbelly of Temple Meads Station as headliner of Room 237's latest party at The Loco Klub. A faceless entity, Stingray is one of the most menacing forces in electronic music, instrumental in bringing the fierce Detroit sound to global audiences and highly regarded among esteemed company like Drexciya, Carl Craig and Moodymann. With prolific French artist Umwelt, exciting producer Afrodeutsche and Room 237 residents completing the lineup, there really is nowhere else to be in Bristol on this bank holiday weekend.

Pretty Pretty Good presents DMX Krew (live) at The Island // Friday 31st May

DMX Krew (live) @ The Island, Friday 31st May

Pretty Pretty Good have arguably saved the best of May until last with the return of all-encompassing producer DMX Krew for a live set in the depths of The Island on Friday 31st. A master of all things electro, his releases on major labels such as Hypercolour, Rephlex Records and Super Rhythm Trax have won him legions of fans around the world but it's his live expertise that have seen him become one of the most in-demand names on the scene in recent years. Any opportunity to make it should be jumped at - a DMX Krew live set truly is a wonder to behold for any electronic music fan.
