Bristol Live - A look back at our March 2019 highlights

Posted on: 05 Apr 2019

As Bristol's leading events and entertainment website, we wouldn't be doing our job at 365Bristol if we didn't review some of the very best events and entertainment the city has to offer, from live music to live magic, theatre to festivals and everything in between. Bristol stages saw a huge range of top-notch shows in March, from eclectic electronic duo Maribou State at the O2 Academy to a mind-bending production of Trainspotting Live in the underbelly of Temple Meads Station - find out what we had to say about the very best of them below.

Nubiyan Twist on stage at Trinity Centre.

The Ponds (Still Waters Run Deep) at Everyman Cinema - Five Stars from Kate Hutchison

"It’s weird because, as I waded to leave through Everyman's plush lounge, I had this odd urge to join the swimmers on a horrifically cold morning for this feeling of existential singularity, freedom from life’s baggage, and everything else. But now as I sit, cuddled in my dressing gown, I think: ‘absolutely fudging not.’ That’s the power of The Ponds: although sometimes sobering and quiet, it’s overarching, uncomplicated joy is utterly infectious. It was the perfect mid-week pick-me-up."

Ruts D.C. live at Thekla - Four Stars from Martin Pace

"A fantastic classic nostalgic punk night on a boat that Segs hoped wouldn’t sink. The PA system at Thekla was Possibly the best it's ever sounded, and there was good crowd banter throughout, exemplified by pork pie hat-donning lead singer Tom's simple retort of, “I want some of what you’re on”, when faced by a torrent of obscenities from someone in the crowd."

Soweto Kinch on stage at the Anson Rooms.

Nubiyan Twist live at Trinity Centre - Five Stars from Matt Robson

"Nubiyan Twist are much more than just a jazz group and their sound encompasses so many different styles, but the way they bounce off each other and interact on stage is what makes their show so exciting. The Trinity Centre - in my opinion one of Bristol's outright best music venues - was the perfect spot for a show like this, but don't be surprised if they have to relocate to somewhere with a much bigger capacity next time they're in the city."

Maribou State live at O2 Academy Bristol - Four Stars from Matt Robson

"With the venue bathed in pale pinks and purples over a backdrop of East Asian landscapes projected onto the screen behind the band, Davids and Ivory were the orchestrators of a flawless performance, becoming the focal point at times during sample-heavy tracks like 'Wallflower' and 'Vale' while shifting the attention onto their fellow performers at others."

Trainspotting Live at The Loco Klub - Five Stars from Matt Robson

"There's something massively fitting about a story like Trainspotting being played out in the caves directly underneath Bristol's Temple Meads Station, and I doubt there's another venue anywhere in the UK that suits the production of the stage version quite so well. If you get any chance to catch one of the remaining shows on the current run before Trainspotting Live moves on, absolutely take it."

Deaf Havana live at O2 Academy Bristol - Five Stars from Jacqui Barton

"Bantering with the crowd, you could see the band members genuinely enjoying themselves, and this set the tone for the rest of the show - literally throwing themselves about the stage, and really getting into each song. Thanking the crowd for being so up for it on a Sunday night, it was exclaimed that Bristol was always “a great and rowdy bunch!” which was obviously met with a mighty Bristolian roar."

Closing Night at the 2019 Bristol International Jazz & Blues Festival - Five Stars from Matt Robson

"Not many genres of music can make you feel in the way that jazz can - that heady mixture of relaxation, warm appreciation and overall contentedness - and the sold-out Bristol Jazz Festival crowd caught the very best of it on Sunday night."
