The annual Life, Death (and the Rest) 4 day festival returns to Arnos Vale Cemetery in Bristol from 28th February thorough until 3rd March 2019

Life, Death (And The Rest) at Arnos Vale Cemetary.Life, Death (and the Rest) is an annual four-day event of talks, walks, theatre and film at Arnos Vale Cemetery. This is the third year the event has been running and the 2019 edition will run from Thursday 28th February to Sunday 3rd March.

 

With a varied and fascinating programme, this event has something to interest everyone. Events ranging from a screening of the popular film Beetlejuice in the romantic Anglican Chapel, through to an enlightening talk on the Buddhist perspective of life and death will be on offer at Arnos Vale.

 

While for some, death remains a taboo subject to discuss, Adela Straughan, Events Coordinator at Arnos Vale explains: “This event supports a growing social movement talking about death, and how we remember our loved ones. We believe that it is important to encourage conversations about death, and a festival of hand picked events seemed like the best way to do it.”

 

What’s On?

With such a jam-packed calendar of events, there’s so much to see and do at the 2019 Life, Death (and the Rest) event. Below is a rundown of some of what you can expect from this unique programme.

 

Thursday 28th February 2019

7pm-8pm

Morbid Curiosity Tour (SOLD OUT) : A tour around the Arnos Vale Cemetery and a chance to hear stories about how people from the past died. Tickets are £10.

 

Friday 1st March 2019

2pm-3pm 

A bubble on a stream : A Buddhist perspective on the cycle of life and death : In an event presented by Sakya Buddhist Centre, Rachel Deeming explores the reflections on the wonder and fragility of human life and what that means for spirituality and the way in which we live. Tickets are FREE.

 

7pm-8.45pm

A Love that Never Dies : This film was created by two bereaved parents, Jane Harris and Jimmy Edmonds. It is a personal journey and also a love letter to their son Josh who died in a road accident in Vietnam. Following the film, there will be a Q&A session with Jane and Jimmy. Tickets are £7.

 

Saturday 2nd March 2019

10am -4pm

Bristol Community Health Team Drop in and health check : The Patient Experience Team from Bristol Community Health will be attending all day. Learn about their palliative care home support, Community Navigators and Community Nursing Fast Track services across Bristol. Get a health check, find out about their work and share your thoughts on the service. FREE.

 

10.30am-3pm

Natural Burial Woodland Tour : A walk and talk with the Arnos Vale Cemetery Services Coordinator to the Natural Burial Woodland. Tickets are FREE.

 

11am-12pm

Alive in Conversation: “Goodnight Friend” : Film screening and talk between Veterinary Surgeon Penny Morgan and death academic Dr John Troyer. Tickets are £5.

 

1pm-2pm

Memento Mori: Victorian Mourning and Sentimental Jewellery : A talk with stories and examples of Victorian mourning fashion and sentiments. Tickets are £5.

 

1.30pm-3pm

Murder, Mayhem and Mystery Tour (SOLD OUT) : A tour detailing some of the more sinister and unusual stories of Arnos Vale. Tickets are £5.

 

3pm-4pm

Graveyard Girl - Life, Death and my Mental Illness : Author of The Graveyard Girl – Life, Death and my Mental Illness, Clara Autumn, talks about life with mental illness. Tickets are £4.

 

7pm-8.30pm

Beetlejuice (SOLD OUT) : Screening of the Tim Burton-directed supernatural comedy in the Anglican Chapel. Tickets are £10.

 

Sunday 3rd March 2019

11.30am-12.30pm

Holding Space film screening and discussion :  the short documentary Holding Space by Rebecca Kenyon, with a discussion facilitated by the Bristol-based organisation DEATH.io. Tickets are FREE.

 

1.30pm-3pm

Sculpture Tour (SOLD OUT) : A tour around some of the beautiful memorials of Arnos Vale Cemetery. Tickets £5.

 

With such a packed schedule of wonderful events, it’s hard to pick a favourite, but Adela Straughan has highlighted her one to watch for this year: 

“I’m most looking forward to the film A Love That Never Dies, followed by Q&A with Jane and Jimmy this year. It will be screening in our Anglican Chapel and will be a highlight of the 2019 festival.”

 

Life, Death (and the Rest) is popular among funeral industry experts. In support of the festival, James Dunn, co-founder of funeral price comparison website Beyond, commented: 

"Events such as 'Life, Death (and the Rest)' play an extremely important role in getting people talking about the subject of death.
