The Galleries Shopping Centre in Bristol is delighted to announce that they are working in partnership with the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol), to provide an opportunity for students to use their business skills within one of the available retail units in the centre.

Earlier this year, the University set up two scholarships – the Start-up Scholarship, which encourages students to generate a new business idea, and the Impact and Innovation Scholarship, which is aimed at students with a creative / enterprising idea.

Students were invited to pitch their ideas to a panel in the spring / summer term, with 10 successful candidates then required to work on their product over the summer.Funding for the scheme has been provided by the four faculties within the University.

With the new academic year just around the corner, students have now been provided with the platform to carry out a trade test of their product / service / skills within The Galleries over the coming weeks. Customers can come in and explore their enterprising ideas, skills and initiatives in the unit located on the middle floor. Projects span the creative arts, science and public engagement and with each student taking their turn in the shop, there promises to be something new to see in the store on each visit.

Lauren Davies, Enterprise Skills Consultant, UWE Bristolsaid: “The Summer Enterprise Scholarships have offered students the chance to test out their ideas for businesses and other enterprising projects in a supportive environment. The option to test trade or showcase their products within The Galleries has been an excellent addition to this project and we are extremely grateful to The Galleries for providing this fantastic opportunity to our students.”

Colin Lang, Centre Manager, The Galleries said: “We’re really pleased to be working in partnership with UWE on this great initiative. It’s a great opportunity for students to put all their acquired skills to the test in a real life scenario.”
