Your guide to the Easter holidays in Bristol

A handy list of family-friendly activities happening across Bristol during the upcoming Easter holidays, when there is much fun to be had for participants of all ages. For more information about each event, click the link in the subtitle.

Today sees Bristol's children break up for their Easter holidays, a stretch of time during which they are given a well-earned break from the books in favour of some extra-curricular enrichment and an unholy amount of chocolate; a stretch of time which, to the unprepared parent, can seem to last a life-time - especially with all of that extra sugar.

 

Fear not though! For Bristol is more than adequately-equipped to pack the week out and keep the youngsters occupied. We have sifted through all the activities that the city has to offer and have compiled the best bits into the list below. Enjoy…

 

 

Captain Barnacle's Pirate Panto aboard The Matthew - Harbourside

An hour-long trip around the harbour aboard The Matthew, a working replica of the first ship to cross the Atlantic, will feature a theatrical turn from Captain Barnacle, whose pantomime show features a trove of puppets, props, comedy and shanties fit for the high seas! Performances take place on the 13th and 21st April.

 

Family fun day at Penny Brohn - Pill

Penny Brohn is the UK charity which helps those living with cancer and their families. To celebrate Easter, on April 8th they are opening the four-acre gardens of their base in Pill for a family fun day, where guests will have the opportunity to win a giant teddy bear by guessing its name. Fun, music and easter eggs and will be in abundance, with all profits going towards the charity’s important work.

 

Clip ‘n Climb - St Werburghs

Clip 'n Climb is composed of a wide selection of climbing-based activities providing healthy, challenging fun for all the family! Test your resolve and determination across all of their separate challenges - climb commando style on the Jungle Gym, reach new heights on the Skyscraper, take the Speed Climbing challenge, tangle yourself in Spaghetti, dare to tackle the Lightning Crack or race your friends up the Stairway to Heaven. No climbing experience is necessary and full briefing is provided.

 

Spike Island art gallery

Spike Island has announced details of the shows they will exhibit this spring, with a double-header of solo exhibitions from Andrea Luka Zimmerman and Giles Round set to open on 8th April, just in time for the Easter holidays! Common Ground, the first UK solo exhibition from celebrated filmmaker Andrea Luka Zimmerman explores the idea of community, whilst proposing new methods for communal living. For Giles Round’s latest offering, They bow. Curtain. No applause., the artist alters Spike Island’s gallery space by teasing out its theatricality.

 

AirHop - Patchway

In AirHop, Bristol is in possession of the world’s biggest trampoline park. Not only comprised of a staggering 135 interconnected trampolines, the complex also incorporates a series of miscellaneous features including slam-dunk lanes, dodgeball courts, slack lines, battle beams and a ‘Total Wipeout zone’. The Easter holiday represents the perfect time to explore this fun-filled indoor play park with your children, who will benefit not just from hours of enjoyment but also physical exercise - which may just tire them out enough for you to have the afternoon off! There are also dedicated bouncing sessions for under 5s.

 

EatWalkTalk Tour - Old City

Chart the rich history of Bristol’s Old City through its modern day food products, as this walking tour with a difference allows you to discover its past with your taste buds. Bristol’s Old City dates back to Medieval times, with the years between then and now containing some particularly juicy history as it grew into a bustling trade port, an industrial hub and the cultural plethora that it is today. Banksy tour

World-renowned street artist Banksy is undoubtedly one of Bristol’s favourite sons and has frequently repaid the faith shown in him by his home by leaving graffiti artworks all over the city. Skins tour

Many of the slightly older residents of Bristol will have notices that Skins, the teen drama set in the city, turned 10 last month. The show, which aired on E4 between 2007 and 2013, grew from a cult hit into a generation-defining phenomenon - and an international showcase for some of Bristol’s most iconic backdrops. Underground egg hunt at Cheddar Gorge

Just outside Bristol is Cheddar Gorge, the outcrop of rare natural beauty that makes for a great day out on any given occasion. During the Easter period however, its appeal will be accentuated by a series of luminous eggs which forms a subterranean trail through Gough’s Caves. Gorgeous!

 

Submarine Easter at Bristol Aquarium

Delve similarly downward at Bristol Aquarium, where they are offering a ‘Submarine Easter’! Between 8th - 23rd April, guests will be encouraged to take the plunge and dive deep down below the waves to catch a glimpse of the wonders that lurk down there. Whether it’s crafting submarines or building sea-scanning vehicles, there’s plenty to be on with during the holidays.
