The Slapstick Festival is one of the highlights on the Bristol cultural calendar. This year will be bigger than ever and we have sets of tickets to give away to both Simon Callow Presents: Chaplin's Greatest Comedy Shorts and Charlie Chaplin in The Great Dictator on Saturday 21 January 2017.

The 13th Slapstick Festival will be held across Bristol venues from 18th to 22nd January 2017. Ever popular and always entertaining, the festival showcases the very best in all comedic excellence from early 20th century silent films to modern day comedians inspired by last century's mirth-making giants.

TO ENTER: Click on our Contact Us section, fill in the details and in the 'Your Message' section simply write "Slapstick". Easy! The winners will be drawn at 4pm on Friday 20th January 2017 and informed shortly afterwards. Good luck!

When The Great Dictator came out, 76 years ago, both the political left and right were puzzled by his final, idealistic address from the screen. Today, you only have to Google “The best speech ever made” or “The World’s greatest speech” – and there it is over and over, as well as being incorporated in innumerable pop songs.

Simon Callow who acknowledges Dickens and Chaplin as major influences on his own glittering and wide-ranging creations in performance on stage, screen and in literature will present his personal tribute to Charlie Chaplin, and introduces a selection of Chaplin’s finest onscreen short comedies.

The Vagabond (1916), Easy Street (1917) and The Pawn Shop (1917) will be accompanied live by the European Silent Screen Virtuosi featuring Günter A. Buchwald (piano and violin), Frank Bockius (percussion) and Romano Todesco (double bass) plus special guest players.

The list of stars include Rory Bremner, Marcus Brigstocke, Alexei Sayle and far too many more to mention. A full festival guide is available here.
