The Crow at Arnos Vale Cemetery - Unique Bristol Screening

Posted on: 04 Apr 2016

The iconic 1994 neo-noir fantasy will be screened at the historic Arnos Vale Cemetery in Bristol. Backyard Cinema will host the production on Friday 29th April 2016 and, if their previous exploits are anything to go by, it will be a superb evening.

The Crow tells the tale of Eric Draven, a rock musician who is murdered along with his fiancée Shelly on Devil’s Night, the night before Halloween and one that saw wanton acts of vandalism and violence sweep the streets of Detroit from the 70s to the 90s. They were due to be married the next day. One year later, a crow taps on the grave stone of Eric Draven; Eric awakens and climbs out of his grave.  He has flashbacks to the murders, remembering that those responsible were T-Bird and his gang: Tin Tin, Funboy, and Skank. Eric soon discovers that any wounds he receives heal immediately. Guided by the crow, he sets out to avenge his and Shelly's murders by killing the perpetrators.

The film is a cult classic in its own right but gained notoriety after the on-set death of Brandon Lee whilst playing the main protagonist, Eric Draven. The son of Bruce Lee, Brandon was involved in a mishap that saw a bullet with no primer or charger left in the chamber of a gun used in a previous scene before it was armed with a blank cartridge due to be fired in an upcoming scene. In the fateful scene, actor Michael Massee's character fires a .44 Magnum Smith & Wesson revolver at Lee as he walks into the room. The primer from the blank was enough to fire the round with almost the same force as if it were a regular live round. Lee was rushed to hospital but, after some six hours of surgery, pronounced dead. Lee had completed most of his scenes for the film and was scheduled to shoot for only three more days. CGI was used to digitally composite Lee's face onto a stunt double to complete his few remaining scenes.

The setting of this event could not be more apt - Arnos Vale Cemetery in Bristol is a truly unique location and is one of the city's best kept secrets. 45 acres of peace and tranquillity offer the perfect respite from the general hustle and bustle of the city, and the site is significant as being a place of heritage that features many monuments of local and global importance as well as historic listed buildings. The backdrop of beautiful scenery and weathered yet beautiful graves will only serve to add to the poignancy of this great event.

Tickets are priced at just £10 and are available here. It will be a sell-out for sure so we really advise you book early. Another piece of advice - and we’re offering you this from experience - is to take something to sit on! A picnic blanket is perfect but if you’re in need of a little more support then a camping chair would be good. There will be a fully stocked bar on site offering hot and cold drinks, as well as a selection of alcoholic beverages, and food will be available too.
