The closest we get to the glorious country of Italy here in Bristol is in most past, through food and the many fantastic Italian eateries the city has to offer. So, in celebration of the special day and all things Italian, we have handpicked some of our favourite Italian restaurants in the city. Wheather your taste is traditional or modern, there is a restaurant to suit everybody.
The 2015 winner of the Bristol Good Food Awards for Best Modern European, Aquila specialises in contemporary Italian dining. As well as having vegan and gluten free options on the menu, they also offer bottomless prosecco lunches. Situated in Bristol’s beautiful city centre on Baldwin Street, the restaurant boasts great views from their two floors with wall-to-ceiling windows.
La Grotta is a quaint independent family run Italian restaurant in the heart of the city’s shopping quarter, Broadmead. Meaning cave in Italian, La Grotta has a cosy and warm atmosphere inside. Serving some of the best authentic Italian dishes in the city, everything on the menu is sourced from fresh ingredients, most of which are imported directly from the motherland itself. Their homemade cheesecake is a firm favourite of customers, with changing flavours each week, it’s an absolute must try!
This eatery is on the more traditional style of Italian cooking and has long-held recidency in the city since its opening in 1961 when it was known as “Marco’s”. After Giuseppe ran the restaurant for 35 years, Marco offered it to him to carry on Bristol’s oldest Italian food tradition. Sat in the heart of the Old City, the menu offers classic recipes and pizzas made using the finest of Italian ingredients.
This friendly and fun restaurant is a BYOB (bring your own booze) eatery! With colourful rustic décor, it offers a unique Italian atmosphere. Located on Frogmore Street in the city centre, it is the perfect setting for both an informal lunch or a special dinner. On the menu are dishes such as Sergio’s Lemon Sole, Cacciucco (fish stew), and Fillet of Venison to name only a few. Traditional home cooked food at its finest, it’s no wonder that many a famous person has eaten here!
Taste of Napoli have quickly made a name for themselves here in the city. Located in The Arcade of Broadmead, it is a family run café, that arose from the desire to bring traditional, authentic Italian food and drinks to Bristol. Their ingredients are sourced directly from Italy and they have many feature foods available. For breakfast they offer a range of Italian pastries, for lunch and dinner they offer foods typical of their Neapolitan heritage and culture, including pizzas and pastas. Taste of Napoli also have many vegan options on the menu and serve the finest of Italian coffee.
This Italian eatery is simplicity at its best. Their aim is to provide the atmosphere of a relaxed Italian family kitchen, with great flavours. Perched on Gloucester Road, Bomboloni is relatively new to the area but always busy with customers dining on the outside road-facing terrace in the sun.
Boasting a taste of Sicily in the heart of Redland, this gorgeous restaurant is famed for its hospitality and of course, its food. Every dish captures the spirit of Sicily, using the freshest and finest of Italian ingredients.
These two restaurants are some of the most sought-after in the city. It can take weeks to secure a table at them, because their homemade pasta is just that amazing. The menus change seasonally with a variety of special ingredients.
