New visitor experience for historic Arnos Vale in Bristol

Posted on: 17 Jul 2015

Bristol’s Arnos Vale Cemetery has launched a new Discovery Trail, with the aim of giving visitors a greater understanding of the popular heritage attraction, whilst improving the overall visitor experience.

The leaflet is free and can be picked up around the site. The trail takes visitors on a self-led journey around the historic landscape, offering greater insight in to some of the notable residents from Bristol’s past, along with the spectacular Victorian architecture and modern day workings of a cemetery. The new Great War Exhibition is located deep in the Anglican Crypt and is just one of the highlights on the tour. The Great War Memorial, Chatri of Rajah Rummohan Roy and two other public exhibitions line the route. This unique ecosystem offers up some wonderful plant and animal life that’s definitely worth keeping an eye out for.

Arnos Vale Chief Executive Mike Coe said: “Arnos Vale holds a special place in the hearts of many people in Bristol but most haven’t had a chance to explore this unique oasis in a way that they will now be able.  The Discovery Trail aims to help people learn more about the history, architecture and wildlife that make Arnos Vale a place to remember for the city, both as a heritage attraction and as a working cemetery.”

45 acres of peace and tranquility offer the perfect respite from the general hustle and bustle of the city, and the site is significant as being a place of heritage that features many monuments of local and global importance as well as historic listed buildings.

An ideal day out for visitors of all ages, dogs are very welcome. There is also a gift shop on-site selling Bristol Blue Glass, unique cards and confectionery, while the Atrium Cafe is the perfect place to sit down for a cup of tea and a slice of homemade cake.

Entry to the site is free as always. Now looked after by the Arnos Vale Cemetery Trust, all donations received on site are doubled by the Heritage Lottery Fund, thus helping to secure the future of Arnos Vale.
