The Volunteer Tavern will serve its final Sunday roast on July 27th, as owner-operator Peter Gibbs who has been at the helm for the past 11 years makes the difficult decision to close the pub's kitchen. High operating costs and a decline in people going out for food have made the kitchen financially unviable for several years. Peter commented:
"I've loved providing food here, and we've been fortunate to have incredible chefs who truly made this kitchen shine. I deeply appreciate their contributions. However, with fewer people dining out and rising food prices, the kitchen has been operating at a loss. We are excited, however, that our heated beer garden remains very popular, and upcoming improvements will allow even more people to enjoy it!"
The kitchen is slated for demolition in the coming months. Architects have developed plans to build a ramp in its space, significantly improving accessibility between the pub and its bustling beer garden. 'The Volly' has launched a fundraising campaign for these planned works, offering 'Volly' t-shirts and the opportunity for donors to have their names on a wall near the ramp.
