Haven for black-owned fashion brands opens in Bristol Arcade
Posted on: 02 Dec 2022A new business is opening in the Bristol Arcade, focusing on black-owned clothing and lifestyle brands – and providing space for them.
The Arcade Bristol is a beloved community retail space – a grade II* listed Victorian shopping arcade, it plays hosts to a tight-knit community of independent shopkeepers – offering an eclectic range of services and products from houseplants, to tattoos, to Neapolitan food and coffee.
Now a new business is joining the ranks of the Arcade that exemplifies that independent spirit and community focus – Afro Street.
Afro Street will be a ‘curated storefront and ecommerce platform’ that showcases the work of fashion brand Duodu London – an African-inspired and black-owned streetwear brand.
Crucially, however, Afro Street also want to provide a home for other black-owned fashion & lifestyle brands. Danny Duod, founder of Duodu London & Afro Street, aims to provide a space for emerging designers to showcase their brands – giving designers without many resources behind them an alternative to a temporary pop-up – and to ‘utilise the collective resources of all brands to facilitate growth for all’.
Duod spoke on the plans for Afro Street’s community focus, saying:
“Like many other brands it is a dream to have your own retail space, but in reality the overheads and risk is too much to shoulder alone. Creating a collaborative with other like minded brands will allow us to all grow together. It’s tough out there, so I feel now more than ever independent brands need to stick together.”
Afro Street will be opening on Tuesday, the 6th of December in the Arcade Bristol in Broadmead. Currently, the opening hours are Monday – Saturday, 11am to 6pm, and 11am to 5pm on Sunday.
Afro Street’s website will launch soon, but until then you can browse the Duodu London collection here.
