Week 2 sees us showcase Hatcher Flooring from Bristol who are a flooring company serving both the domestic and commercial markets. We caught up with owner Matthew Hatcher over the weekend to ask him our Big 10 questions.
1. When did you set up Hatcher Flooring?
Hatcher flooring was set up as an independent Bristol business in 2000. I have over 20 years of experience in the industry and after serving my apprenticeship it made sense to start working for myself.
2. Are you from Bristol?
Everyone connected to Hatcher Flooring are from Bristol. Born and raised here and know the city very well.
3. How's business?
Business is good and we are busy. We have certainly noticed the positive news stories about recovery and peoples attitudes towards spending.
4. Tell us about your business?
Hatcher Flooring are a well established flooring company capable of supplying and installing all types of flooring. We have built up a reputation on honesty and quality workmanship, which is evident in the recommendations we receive from our clients.
5. How do you find running an independent business in Bristol?
There is always hardship in running an independent business, but if you work hard and put the effort in the rewards are there. Working for Bristolians who are fantastic people also helps.
6. Where do you like to eat out in Bristol?
We like to eat out at San Carlo on Corn Street, the choice is excellent as well as the service.
7. What's your favourite place in Bristol?
Apart from being home with family, Ashton Gate has to be our favourite place to be in Bristol. Although we have had a few tough seasons Bristol City is in your blood, and always will be.
8. Where do you see Hatcher Flooring in 5 years time?
Hopefully we can continue to grow our business, take on new contracts and staff, which has been the case over the last five years.
9. What advice would you give to any aspiring Bristol small business owners?
Work hard, know your business, always be honest and upfront so all parties know where they are, and try to enjoy it.
10. If you were Mayor of Bristol for a day which one thing would you change?
If I was Mayor for the day I would make sure the arena for the city was built. It is long overdue and a city of our size needs something like this. All the contracts would of course go to Bristol companies as well!
