Getting to Know Bristol with The Redgrave Theatre

Posted on: 07 Jan 2015

Our first Getting to Know Bristol feature of 2015 is about The Redgrave Theatre that is located within the grounds of Clifton College. 365Bristol spoke with theatre manager David Fells to find out more about this hidden gem in Bristol.

When was The Redgrave Theatre opened and can you give us a bit of history?

The Redgrave Theatre opened back in the 1960's and was originally the Clifton College Theatre. It was later renamed after one of the famous old school boys Michael Redgrave, a famous actor and director. As well as school productions it hosts shows for amateur dramatic companies and even live music and comedy nights. The capacity is 315 so it is a great fit for shows that might perhaps not be large enough for The Bristol Hippodrome and our stage is about the same size as the Bristol Old Vic - just without the flies or scene dock.

Are you from Bristol?

I am originally from Devon and moved to Bristol about 8 years ago after university and working in TV. After a short trip to the City we fell in love with the place.

How's it going?

The theatre is extremely busy. In my 8 years we have gone from 2-3 regular staff to now employing 8 technicians and a new box office manager who is starting with us soon. We are running at 94% capacity for the show schedule so there is a little room for improvement but we do of course need to have some lead time into the bigger shows.

In 2015 we've already got sold out shows for the comedian Tim Vine and lots more great events. The full schedule can be checked at www.redgravetheatre.com and huge shows for later in the year include Shaun of the Dead and Avenue Q. On top of this add on Film Screenings, Tribute Bands, Jersey Boys and loads more.

What facilities do you provide for companies wanting to put on shows at your venue?

We have made huge investments in our audio visual equipment which is available for all the amateur dramatic societies, and other performers, to utilise. This can sometimes be a huge financial burden for smaller companies so by us looking after that side they can concentrate on making their shows as brilliant as possible.

Where do you like to eat out in Bristol?

Loch Fyne is a firm favourite and as I live in Bedminster you'll often find me in places such as Viva La Mexicana, Ganesha or The Steam Crane over on North Street.

What's your favourite place in Bristol?

The Suspension Bridge which I tend to go across every day. It's what everyone thinks of when you mention Bristol. We live in a great city with a terrific vibe. Yes some places need tidying up and redeveloping but in my short 8 years here the city does seem to be evolving. Let's please ensure though that all the green spaces in the city are kept for the enjoyment of everyone rather than just the property investors.

Where do you see The Redgrave Theatre in 5 years time?

We've got a few projects already underway and within 5 years these should be completed such as having our own specific Box Office and online ticketing system. We will continue to invest in our stock to make it easier for local shows and groups to put on their performances. Aside from that we concentrate on things like energy efficiency and have recently modernised to LED's through one of our suppliers at Global Design Solutions. Sustaining our usage and increasing the current 94% up to near maximum would be another goal!

What advice would you give to other theatre companies and amateur dramatic societies looking to move to a larger venue such as The Redgrave Theatre?

Don't assume you cannot afford the venue, speak to us. Whilst we are of course looking to book shows for The Redgrave Theatre we know all the other venues well and are able to offer advice.

If you were Mayor of Bristol for a day which one thing would you change?

I'd like to see the idea of a Community Hub for every neighbourhood to be further developed. It seems to have happened in some places and not others. As I live in Bedminster it is great to see that regeneration and investment is now spreading out to East Street and West Street but perhaps the pace can be picked up!
