Food poverty charity FoodCycle launch their Big Give Christmas Challenge

Posted on: 02 Dec 2022

The Christmas campaign aims to provide healthy meals and warm spaces for those who need them this winter with donations made doubled on the Big Give platform.

FoodCycle’s Big Give Christmas Challenge 2022 launched on Tuesday 29 November and runs until Tuesday 6 December.

A nationwide charity, the FoodCycle team have seen numbers swell at their projects up and down the country as the cost-of-living crisis rages out of control. By supporting the Christmas Challenge, donations will become twice as valuable.

Over the next week, FoodCycle will be raising funds to run their national network of over 55 community meal projects, serving up free hot, 3-course meals for anyone in need, plus extra food to take away. They also give people a safe, welcoming space to socialise, something that is becoming increasingly difficult due to the ongoing cost of living crisis.

Food and energy prices are rocketing and low-income households are being thrown into fuel poverty, something which shows no sign of abating. This means increased demand for FoodCycle’s services as people all over the country brace themselves for a tough winter.

FoodCycle say that 75% of people who use their network often skip meals and 63% feel that they can’t afford the food they need. One service user said: “Never in my life have I had worries like now.”

FoodCycle Bristol has been operating in the city since 2009 and we have 2 projects, serving free community meals each week with donated surplus food, one in Barton Hill on a Saturday lunchtime and one in Easton on a Wednesday night. More information can be found here.

For this week only, as part of the Big Give Christmas Challenge, donations to FoodCylce via The Big Give will be doubled so head to the campaign website and give what you can.
