Deerhoof continues to defy convention with bold new album and will be live at Strange Brew in Bristol on Tuesday 22 July 2025. The show has already sold out but check here in case there are any returns or late availability!

Few bands in independent music have demonstrated the longevity, invention, and unshakable weirdness of Deerhoof. The experimental rock outfit, formed in 1994 in San Francisco, has spent the past three decades quietly reshaping the boundaries of noise-pop and avant-garde rock — and with their newly released 20th studio album Noble and Godlike in Ruin, they show no signs of slowing down.

Founded by drummer Greg Saunier and guitarist Rob Fisk in the heart of the city’s 1990s noise-punk scene, Deerhoof quickly found its distinctive voice when Japanese bassist and vocalist Satomi Matsuzaki joined the lineup in 1995. Her high, childlike vocals and unorthodox stage presence added a charming counterpoint to the band's chaotic instrumentals.

Through countless lineup shifts — with John Dieterich and Ed Rodriguez now handling guitars alongside Saunier and Matsuzaki — Deerhoof built a reputation for unpredictable albums and electrifying live shows. Their sound defies easy classification, veering from fractured punk to whimsical pop and avant-garde noise, often within the same track.

“We never made a decision to be a certain kind of band,” Saunier said in a 2023 interview. “We just wanted to keep ourselves surprised.”

That ethos remains intact on Noble and Godlike in Ruin, a dense, politically charged record reportedly inspired by Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Recorded entirely in makeshift home studios, the album is a raw, unfiltered burst of ideas — a hallmark for a band that has always prized spontaneity over polish.

It follows 2023’s Miracle-Level, Deerhoof’s first album recorded in a traditional studio and sung entirely in Japanese. That record marked a bold new chapter for the group, expanding their sonic palette while embracing Matsuzaki’s cultural roots.

Over the years, Deerhoof has earned critical acclaim from outlets like Pitchfork, which once dubbed them “the best band in the world,” and The New York Times, which called them “one of the most original rock bands of the past 20 years.” They’ve shared stages with Radiohead, Sonic Youth, and The Flaming Lips, and their live performances remain a collision of unhinged joy and precision.

Despite their often challenging music, Deerhoof’s influence has quietly seeped into the broader indie and experimental scenes. They’ve inspired a generation of musicians to eschew genre constraints, embrace DIY recording, and treat limitations as creative opportunities.

As Noble and Godlike in Ruin lands in a crowded and ever-shifting music landscape, Deerhoof’s unflagging commitment to artistic freedom and playfulness feels more vital than ever.

“We’re not trying to be timeless,” Matsuzaki told fans during a recent live stream. “We’re just trying to be alive.”
