Posted on: 14 Jun 2024

Running for four days NEXT WEEK, ‘Windrush to Bristol’ commemorates the extraordinary stories and contributions of individuals from this generation.

Windrush to Bristol runs across Bristol Beacon’s three venues between Wednesday 19 and Saturday 22 June 2024.

Through a jam-packed programme of performance, exhibitions and events, this three-day extravaganza will honour the incredible impact on and legacy of Black Caribbean people on Bristol, the UK and the world, inviting Bristolians to champion a more equitable city for people of all colours, cultures and class.

Find out more about the full programme here.

Discover the history of Windrush with Pegasus Opera’s ‘Windrush – The Journey’ (Thursday 20 – Saturday 22 June), telling the stories of those who arrived on HMS Windrush, bringing them back to life with powerful music and storytelling.

This brand-new work, commissioned by Windrush Opera, will be presented to audiences alongside a beautiful programme of music from distinguished black composers as well as an immersive exhibition.

Dive into the music of Black Caribbean artists from Bristol and beyond. On Friday 21, Bristol Beacon and St Paul’s Carnival’s ‘Back A Yard’ programme will celebrate the work of some of the best local and, reggae, dub and dancehall artists through live performances.

A thought-provoking exhibition, Race Cards: A Blueprint4Change from CuriosityUnltd, will inspire visitors with a new, more equitable vision of Bristol’s future as they read the reflections of Bristol people on questions of race, representation, and resilience.

Visitors will also be among the first people to hear a powerful anthem for change in ‘We Rise’, a track created by young Bristol artists from ACE CIC in St Paul’s, inspired by the 60th anniversary and legacy of the Bristol Bus Boycott.

Running at Bristol Beacon’s from Wednesday 19 to Saturday 22 June 2024, Windrush To Bristol invites everyone to hear their message, one of resilience and hope for a future, inspired by the pioneers who have gone before. Browse the programme here.
