Bristol Varsity series to kick off this week

Posted on: 14 Mar 2017

The rivalry between UWE and the University of Bristol is set to reach its annual fever pitch as this year’s Varsity series gets underway, bringing with it dozens of clashes between the universities’ sporting teams.

The drawing of the battle lines and the flying of the ‘#embracetherivalry’ banners can only mean one thing: Varsity is back. The sporting series, during which the universities of Bristol and UWE collide in a succession of competitive clashes, commences again this week for the 23rd time since its origin in 1995.

Beginning on the 16th March with the launch at Walkabout, Varsity then takes in numerous events over the rest of the month, with highlights including the boat race on the 18th, Varsity Day on the 28th and rugby on the 29th, before football takes place a month later on the 29th April.

Mayor of Bristol, Marvin Rees, said: “The Varsity series will be an important event during our year as European City of Sport.

“As well as providing entertaining contests for everyone to enjoy, Varsity also raises vital funds for local charities."
