Bristol Hippodrome summer highlights

Posted on: 27 Jul 2017

A spotlight on the best plays and musicals coming up at the Bristol Hippodrome this summer, as we arrive at its mid-point.

Though theatre tends to be a more obvious vestige of the festive period, with dramatic action and the creaks of the boards a perfect remedy for a cold winter’s night, the Bristol Hippodrome has planned a barnstormer of a programme for the summer months.

And though its stage has already played host to the stars of Dirty Dancing, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time and, erm, Chas and Dave so far in May, June and July, there is still plenty to come before the evenings shorten and the clocks go back again.

Dreamboats and Petticoats – 24th – 29th July

A musical celebration of a golden age of rock’n’roll, this jukebox narrative plays out the formative experiences and romances of a group of teenagers coming of age in 1960s America.

That’ll Be The Day – 30th July

That’ll Be The Day is in town for one night only on the 30th July, bringing with it a rapid-fire succession of solid gold hits spanning from the early 1950s up to 1985, showcasing what its original producers called ‘The Happy Days of Rock’n’Roll’. Do we sense a theme developing here?

Nun’s the word! Chart-topping pop star Alexandra Burke stars in the role made famous by Whoopi Goldberg, when Sister Act arrives in Bristol for a six-day run. Craig Revel Horwood directs and choreographs the story of ex-diva Deloris Van Carter, who is placed under protective custody in the guise of a nun – a nun with a habit of breaking into songs inspired by Motown, funk and disco.
