An eclectic international music star is launching his debut album next month

Mohammed Errebba, one of the youngest Gnawa masters in the world, is launching the debut album of his new 7-piece jazz collective, Tagna Groove.

 

Mohammed Errebba is a highly accomplished and fascinating musician: Born in Morocco, he began performing with traditional Sufi brotherhoods at ten, later spending a decade travelling through Morcco, studying with masters of the three-stringed Gnawa bass lute known as the Guembri.

 

Having since achieved the title of Maalem (master of the Gnawa tradition) at the young age of 28, Errebba has brought his masterful Gnawa practice to the world stage – and the stages of festivals like WOMAD, Shambala, as well as many across Bristol.

Not content with stopping there, Errebba has now founded a brand-new 7-piece collective, Tagna Groove – a project seeking to recontextualise Gnawa music with contemporary jazz, soul & afro-funk.

 

Now, Mohammed Errebba and Tagna Groove are launching their debut album, Hali – and they’re celebrating it with a special gig at the Jam Jar to warm up the cold December night with a generous helping of warm Moroccan rhythms.

 

 

The gig will be a night of global music – expect hypnotic, bass-heavy dance grooves, afro-funk brass stabs & soulful vocals drawing on the deep trance power of the Gnawa repertoire, an ancient tradition of religious observation through ritual poetry and rhythm. So whether you’re looking to light up your soul, warm up your body – or just get those feet moving to a beat, this gig has something for you to enjoy.
