Catch the Severnside derby at Ashton Gate in this early weekend fixture

Bristol City v Cardiff City at Ashton Gate on 22 January 2022

Catch Bristol City v Cardiff City at Ashton Gate Stadium in this EFL Championship fixture on 22 January 2022. Kickoff is at 12:30PM.

Nigel Pearson's men will be welcoming local rivals from the other side of the bridge, Cardiff City, to South Bristol in this Championship fixture. It has been a disappointing start to the season for both clubs as they wallow in the bottom half of the table with the visitors having dismissed Mick McCarthey earlier in the season.

When the two teams met earlier this season it was The Robins that were victorious thanks to a 2-1 away win. Andreas Weimann put the away side 1-0 up but City captain Dan Bentley's own goal made honours even again before Weimann pounced again towards to end of the match to grab a deserved win. Last season saw mixed results for The Robins as Chris Martin's early goal proved the winner, and only goal of the game, at The Cardiff City Stadium and Cardiff easily saw off The Robins at Ashton Gate with a 2-0 win in February.

Bristol City Football Club - The Robins

Bristol City Football Club, nicknamed ‘The Robins’, are currently playing their football in the EFL Championship, the second tier of English football. Their home ground is Ashton Gate Stadium and has recently been rebuilt, giving it a capacity of 27,000.

City go into the 2021/22 season under new manager Nigel Pearson aiming to improve on last season's disappointing 19th place finish that saw them tumble towards the relegation zone. The Robins have had a mixed start to the season and currently sit comfortably mid table. Pearson appears to have given the team a far more solid spine thanks to the signings of ex-Leicester midfielder Matty James and exciting young ball playing centre back Rob Atkinson.

BRISTOL CITY FOOTBALL CLUB HISTORY

Founded in 1897, the club achieved their highest league finish of Division One runners up in 1907 and two years later played in their only major cup final, losing 1-0 to Manchester United in the FA Cup. The club last played in the top-flight of English football from 1976 to 1980.

The 2006-07 season saw the club win promotion to the Football League Championship after finishing second in League One. The following season Bristol City narrowly missed out on Premier League football losing to Hull City in the Championship play-off Final. Having been relegated back to League One after the 2012-2013 season when they finished bottom of the table they were promoted back to The Championship in 2015 and have maintained their second tier status ever since.

The clubs honours include twice being winners of Football League Trophy in 1986 and 2003, the 1934 Welsh Cup and the 1978 Anglo-Scottish Cup when they defeated St. Mirren.
