Arguably one of the most open-eared and adventurous drummers around, Richard is a man who inhabits two worlds: he trained as a jazz drummer but drum & bass and broken beat is his internal heartbeat. Bringing his “fierce, fastmoving set” (The Guardian) to Rough Trade Bristol with guitarist Stuart McCallum (Cinematic Orchestra) and bassist Robin Mullarkey (Jacob Collier), Spaven’s “snare-drum shuffles and lurching offbeats” offer contemporary electronica with the feel of a live album.
Richard Spaven trained as a jazz drummer but drum & bass and broken beat is his internal heartbeat. Accordingly, the music he makes straddles both incarnations, narrowing any gulf there might have been between jazz and dance music.
Spaven has supplied the drums for many artists on stage and in the studio including José James, Flying Lotus, The Cinematic Orchestra, Guru’s Jazzmatazz, Gregory Porter to name but a few.
In 2010 he released his solo debut 5ive’s EP (Jazz Refreshed) and with a guest appearance by José James on the track Maz the record turned heads in both the jazz and club DJ scenes. In 2014 he followed with Whole Other defying genres with performances from Blue Note trumpeter Takuya Kuroda playing soulfully amongst ragga tinged drums. In 2017 he released his third solo album ‘The Self’ and in November 2018 he will release his fourth ‘Real Time’.
