Colston Hall announces first gig for Bristol’s Fair Saturday on 23rd Nov
Posted on: 08 Nov 2018Colston Hall has announced a new gig launching Bristol’s first ever Fair Saturday, as kraftwerk re:werk comes to the Marble Factory on Friday 23rd November.
Pioneers in the world of electronic music; Kraftwerk’s music has been reimagined by composers Charlotte Harding and Lloyd Coleman to create kraftwerk re:werk. The ground-breaking musical experience will be performed by the 39-piece ensemble under the leadership of acclaimed conductor, Charles Hazlewood.
Bringing the orchestra to the unorthodox environment of the Marble Factory, a live music and club venue transformed from a former skate park, the concert takes Kraftwerk’s iconic album Trans-Europe Express as the starting point for an exciting symphonic trip.
Created by composers Charlotte Harding and Lloyd Coleman, kraftwerk re:werk premiered at Colston Hall as part of Simple Things Festival 2017, and brought together a mix of symphonic and electronic instruments, so that each and every sound on-stage is amplified and filtered live, turning the orchestra into a giant synthesizer.
Conducted by the award-winning Charles Hazlewood and performed by The British Paraorchestra & Army of Generals, the 39-piece ensemble contains synthesizers, drum machines and live percussion, alongside bass oboes, an electro harp and a suite of orchestral strings and brass.
Charles Hazlewood says: “Kraftwerk upended popular music by flooding their truly original electro-pop style with the influences from their classical music education, so returning the favour and turning an orchestra loose on the sounds of a classic Kraftwerk album extends the adventure for us all. Charlotte and Lloyd haven’t only respected the essence of Kraftwerk’s brilliance and original intentions in the new music, but have combined a live band, a synth-ensemble and an orchestra, amplified to compete in the enormous wall of sound, to shake the foundations of each venue with an effect that’s bold, essentially modern and fantastic fun.”
On top of the headline performance of kraftwerk re:werk, experimental musician Max Cooper joins the bill in Bristol for the only date on this tour, to present a live AV set that will take the audience on an incredible filmic journey. Linking his interest in science, music and visual arts, Cooper’s mesmerising collection of ideas and audio-visual experiments form an immersive sound experience.
The event launches Bristol as the first official Fair Saturday city in England. Fair Saturday is a global movement bringing together thousands of artists and cultural organisations in order to celebrate the arts and culture, but more importantly to raise awareness on social issues, specifically the controversy surrounding Black Friday consumerism.

Fair Saturday takes place on 24th November, the day after Black Friday, and brings together arts, culture and social issues to sing and reflect on, raising funds for charities in the process. Fair Saturday aims to make a positive social impact, and to show how arts and culture are effective drivers of change and are essential to building a better and fairer society.
