An evening at Everyman Cinema in Bristol watching A Quiet Place

An evening at Everyman Cinema in Bristol watching A Quiet Place

A trip to Everyman in Bristol is more than an average cinema experience.

We visited the Whiteladies Road venue on a busy Friday evening, to see the film A Quiet Place. The film is, as the title states, quiet. The storyline follows a family of four in an almost post-apocalyptic world where horrific monsters roam the land, hunting their prey by the sounds that they make.

Plush velvet seating is spaced around the room, large mirrors hang on the wall, and bold marble pillars stand in the bar area. The place is so atmospheric in all its grandeur that I would be happy to simply enjoy a drink there for hours on end. Music plays loudly whilst people chat and sip on cocktails in the foyer before heading up to the screen.

Stepping inside Everyman, we were greeted by the lovely Darren, the General Manager. He gave us our tickets and explained how it works. With our seat numbers, we head to the bar area, where they have menus with many food and drink options. We ordered a couple of cocktails, to be delivered to our seats, during the advert time before the film starts. We were seated in screen 1, the most grand of them all! Row upon row of velvet red and pink seats line the room, in what looks like a vintage theatre, with gold period features on the ceiling and around the sides of the room. At first, we decided against ordering food as we had already eaten, but once sat, some rather delicious smelling aromas were wafting about the room and we were persuaded. The time had already passed to order food but the fantastic staff made an exception, as we went back to the bar. We decided on some tapas dishes; chorizo, Padron peppers and tortilla chips with homemade guacamole, priced at £12 all together. The food was exceptional, which is not something that can usually be said for most cinemas. Padron peppers are a long-standing favourite of mine, they have the appearance of large green chillies, but are in-fact peppers. Lightly pan-fried and garnished with some rock salt, they are a moreish delight. The chorizo needed no garnish, as the small sausage-like ends are flavoursome enough. Polished off in no time, with the tortilla chips and guac, the tapas dishes were the perfect size to keep us satisfied throughout the film, alongside some popcorn of course.

They are also introducing mouth-watering burgers to the menu in the coming months which will be priced at around £11 (including a side of fries). Cocktails are priced around £8 and include Espresso Martini, Passionfruit Daiquiri and Elderflower Spritz and more!

A Quiet Place is a good film, if you’re not looking for heaps of dialogue and action. There are some hectic and scary moments during, but the majority of it is tense and as you guessed it- quiet! Nothing the staff at Everyman haven’t thought of though, as they passed around noise-proof boxes to eat out of, before the film started. Foolishly, I did not take one and we became very aware of how loud we sounded eating popcorn, so we refrained until a loud moment happened, then we would frantically stuff it into our mouths. The same can be said for a lot of people in the audience, as nobody dared eat otherwise. I won’t give too many spoilers of the plot away here…as you have to watch it for yourselves. The film is showing at Everyman until Thursday 26th April, unless it continues (which is a possibility) and you can buy tickets here.

Everyman is one of the only places I would go to alone, and that’s saying something. Despite the large scale of the theatre, you feel private and comfortable in your seats. I don’t think I’ll want to go to an average cinema ever again for a few reasons. Firstly, the price of a ticket at Everyman is only £3 more than that of a Cinema de Lux in Cabot Circus ticket priced at £10.50. Everyman is priced at £13.50 and for that small difference in price, you get a monumental difference in experience. Secondly, the service impeccable, with alcoholic drinks and freshly cooked food brought to your seats by attentive and cheerful people. Thirdly, the seats are plush, velvety and big with cushions and spacious side-tables, almost like a mini-sofa, perfect for you and a partner to cuddle up to each other, underneath one of their blankets- which they supply freely on the stage by the screen.

What I also have to mention, which I rate very highly, is that there were three toilet options; Everyman, Everywoman, and Everybody. It is hugely important for venues to accommodate those who don’t identify to male/female genders, and for the trans and non-binary community. Something that every venue should be implementing in my opinion.

What can be said for sure, is that they get it right here. From the gorgeous food and alcoholic drink options, to the fantastic service and lavish seating. If you haven’t been to Everyman yet, what are you waiting for! It truly is a luxurious place that somehow manages to feel homely at the same time.
