Ahh Easter! The wonderful holiday, marking the dawn of spring, and with that, life. Baby animals shall be birthed and much food shall be consumed, the weather is getting warmer and with that our smiles. A believer of religion or not, we are all united in chocolatey joy. And, if you’re the type who takes their chocolate seriously, keep reading. We have selected four shops in Bristol who supply or make their own hand-crafted chocolate Easter eggs.

Papa Deli, is a special place indeed. The delicatessen was established in 2002, and fifteen years later, it is still brimming with the most wonderful selection of fine foods from Spain, Italy, Portugal, along with produce from closer to home, too. They source some mighty fine chocolate from Italy, as well as from our own Bristol. Make sure you visit the deli to have a look at all the amazing eggs and to buy a raffle ticket to win their monster size chocolate egg! They are £1 each and all proceeds go to Jessie May Charity. The draw will be on Good Friday.

Zara’s Chocolates

This small chocolatier, quickly made a name for itself and it’s no surprise as to why. Keeping production on a small scale and making everything by hand, in-store in an open kitchen, make Zara's Chocolates an artisan Wonder. After teaming up with Ivory Flowers, their shop on North Street, Southville is half chocolate shop, half florist delight. Here you can see Zara and fellow chocolatier, Helen, hand-crafting truffles and a whole range of tempting treats including some beautiful speckled Easter eggs. All of the flourishes and decoration are created by hand and Zara’s Chocolates has become renowned for producing consistently excellent chocolate and innovative flavour combinations. In 2014, Zara's Chocolates was nominated for a Bristol Good Food Award, this came as a complete surprise to Zara, as it was the lovely people of Bristol who had submitted the nomination. Zara was further taken aback to actually win the award in 2014, 2015 and again for 2016. Stop by for a visit and you’ll be greeted with the lovely aromas of fresh flowers and chocolate, what could be better?

The original and most long-standing chocolatier in the city, Guilbert’s have been making Delicious handmade chocolates since 1910. Piers Guilbert opened his first chocolate shop on Park Street over 100 years ago. The dite was bombed in the war so in 1958, the shop relocated to Leonard Lane. The shop now resides at the Foster rooms, a historical former home of the 15th Century merchant John Foster. Made by traditional methods by hand, they have a beautiful range of expertly crafted chocolate eggs on offer. So be sure to head there when thinking of your chocolate eggs!

Hotel Chocolat

Rocky Road egg from Hotel Chocolat

Hotel Chocolat have crafted something very special this Easter…

Behold! The Rocky Road extra thick egg:

Half caramel chocolate Easter egg, half 40% milk chocolate with cookies and puffed rice. This rocky road Easter egg is filled with some most mellow creations.

“When we first started making our Easter eggs more than a decade ago, we were advised by experts to make them as thin as possible. We did the opposite, opting for ridiculously thick shells that are still satisfyingly snappable.

We’re one of the world’s few chocolate makers to actually grow cocoa, on our beautiful Rabot Estate plantation in Saint Lucia. Connecting cocoa-growing with luxury chocolate making and retailing makes us unique in the UK, and gives us an in-depth understanding of the factors that impact the final flavour of our chocolate, right from the growing tree.”

It’s no wonder that their chocolate is so utterly delicious. Head to the store in Cabot Circus to get your family one of their extra thick eggs, we can guarantee they’ll be after them year after year.
