Film fans in Bristol have been given an exclusive opportunity to catch the brand-new documentary film, Here To Be Heard, looking at the story of seminal all-girl punk group The Slits. The film is being promoted with a series of regional series up and down the country, with one taking place at Bristol's Everyman Cinema on Wednesday 9th May 2018. The screening features a live Q&A with the film's director and members of the band.

The Slits are widely regarded as the first-ever major all-girl punk group.

Here To Be Heard: The Story of The Slits is a brand-new documentary directed by William E Badgley. It's a detailed look at the history of the first ever major all-girl punk band, whose rise in the late 70's saw them release Cut, a defining album of the post-punk era, and support bands like The Clash and Buzzcocks on tour. The film received its world premiere at the BFI London Film Festival back in October last year, and is now being rolled out for a series of special screenings at select cinemas around the country.

Contemporaries of The Clash and Sex Pistols, and the godmothers of what is often referred to as the 'punky reggae' musical movement, the band depicted in Here To Be Heard were pioneers of the mid-70's punk era, whose female voice was something that had never been seen before on the same scale. The film runs from the groups inception in 1976, through their breakup and subsequent resurrection 2005 until putting a stop to the band for good in 2010 following the death of lead vocalist, Ari Up.

It features interviews with former manager Don Letts, a number of former band members Ari Up, Palmolive, Tessa Pollitt and Hollie Cook, as well as producers, other artists, Punk experts, friends and collaborators.

Before it's taken off for the run of UK screenings, you can catch it in London again at the Sound Screen Music & Film Festival, which runs from Sunday 25th-Tuesday 27th March. Future screenings are scheduled in Birmingham, Oxford, Leeds, Edinburgh, Liverpool, Bristol, Cardiff, Manchester and more throughout late March, April and early May. The DVD is set for general release on Friday 20th April 2018.

Here To Be Heard: The Story of The Slits is due for a screening at Bristol's Everyman Cinema, on Wednesday 9th May. For more information or to see what else is on, visit Everyman's website or check out the film's official Facebook page.
