The original film that spawned the wildly successful Austin Powers franchise, International Man Of Mystery was a box office hit on its release back in 1997. The story follows a quintessentially British secret agent from the 1960's who is cryogenically frozen by the British government, woken up 30 years later to stop arch-nemesis Dr. Evil from taking over the world. The showing at Colston Hall on Monday 21st May will feature a special live orchestral performance of the film's famous soundtrack, originally scored by celebrated American composer George S. Clinton.

Colston Hall is tailor-made for live orchestra performances.

In the film, the multi-talented Mike Myers brilliantly plays both the hero Austin Powers, and his nemesis, Dr. Evil, backed up by fellow acting heavyweights Elizabeth Hurley, Robert Wagner, Will Ferrell and more. A spoof of classic 1960s spy movies like James Bond, the film was an instant hit and spawned two more in the series in 1999 and 2002. International Man of Mystery grossed over $67 million worldwide on its release.

Quite uniquely for a comedy film, the score for Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery was carefully considered, and eventually composted by the acclaimed George S Clinton, eventually receiving nominations for Grammy and Emmy Awards. Clinton has since received 8 BMI Film Music Awards for his work, as well as a 2007 Richard Kirk Award for contributions to film and music.

The score itself is fun, totally original and does a perfect job of making a playful nod to the spy films of the 60s. Past the world of film, though, Clinton has also written several concert works and contributed to three original musicals. He now serves as an adviser at the Sundance Institute and was formerly a chair of the Film Scoring Department at Berkley College of Music in Boston.
