New Writers Workshop at the Grain Barge Bristol 4th December

Posted on: 30 Nov 2017

The Bristol River Writers host a monthly event which goes by the name of the New Writers Workshop. The event is on the first Monday of every month and on Monday the 4th of December, it is taking place at the Grain Barge from 7.30 to 10.30pm.

Perhaps you fancy your hand at writing something that you've always wanted to, or maybe you're an avid writer wanting an opinion. Alternativley, you might simply want to sit back and listen to some great stories.

The event is open to everybody, to take ten minutes of their work to be read aloud. It can be any piece of creative writing, be it a play, an excerpt of a novel or a poem. The only rule is that it must be read by somebody else!

The idea behind the workshop is to create a relaxed, friendly space but to also benefit from having your work read aloud by a different voice. Reinforcing the thought that, with the exception of performance poetry, hearing your words through somebody else can be hugely valuable. Your story, the plot and the characters are subjective to different interpretations, that do not always share the same bias as you, the writer.

The founder Stuart Found of the Bristol River Writers comments saying:

“Whilst writers’ nights are not a new invention by any means, I started running this one because I think it’s really important to put that idea of a foreign experience you can feel at the forefront of your work. The best way to do that in my mind is to invite writers of all disciplines, from all different stages of experience and development into a room and have their words read out by a voice that isn’t theirs.”

Anyone can attend and it is actively encouraged to do so, even if you don’t bring extracts and just want to listen. The Bristol River Writers’ pride themselves on creating an open space for all to enjoy and partake in, enabling people to experience interesting and unique ideas from the local community.

The workshops are free to attend, with the only advice being to buy a drink from the bar…of course!
