My Bristol Food with Duncan Chisholm

Posted on: 27 Nov 2017

In our My Bristol Food series, we talk with some of the most prominent Bristol foodies around to get their take on what makes the city's culinary scene tick and also get their recommendations. This week we spoke with Duncan Chisholm.

Who are you?

Duncan Chisholm, originally from Edinburgh, moved here 3 years ago from Glasgow.

Where are your most-visited food places in Bristol?

Poco on Stokes Croft is amazing, the cocktails are amazing. Pizza Workshop on Whiteladies Road is great – the service is fast and the ingredients are excellent. Rice & Things also introduced me to Caribbean food, which is great – especially the cow foot curry.Poco Bristol

Where in Bristol has the...

Best Burger

Grillstock – even the takeaway is excellent and better than most restaurant-served burgers - let's hope it stays open!

Grillstock Bristol

Best Sunday Roast

The Hillgrove just up the hill from Stokes Croft. The meat is amazing!

Best Pub/bar

The Hillgrove or The Hare in Bedminster

Best Pizza

Depends – Grecian when I have no money, Pizza Workshop is the best pizza overall though

Pizza Workshop

Best for special occasions

Wallfish, because it’s excellent but still relaxed.

Best Brunch

Rosemarino’s in Clifton.

Best indie producer/shop/market

Licata’s on Picton St (even if it’s starting to get a bit dated – still the best olive oil I have had in the UK at that price, and they sell Provolone at a decent price), and Divino in Clifton, although the pasta flour is extortionate.

Best Indian

Is Thali, because you are encouraged to eat with your hands which is a completely different experience of food.

Any other top foodie tips?

Yes – it’s completely overlooked but you would think with all the well-meaning talk in Bristol about almost every hip issue under the sun, restaurant guides etc might pay more attention to the fact that there a very few successful restaurants run by women – so for me, Kate & Kim’s place on Picton St is excellent and they are nice people. They have also published a book, but of course Casamia etc are much more interesting because they have a star etc etc and they are also male-owned.

If you were the Mayor of Bristol for a day what would you do?

Sort out the parking in the city!

You’ve got 24 hours in Bristol to show some visitors around. What are you going to do?

Go walk on the Durdham Down, go to the Port O’Call, the White Lion and the Bag O’Nails then to The Hare in Bedminster, then to the Hillgrove. Topps Pizza delivery and Bob’s your uncle

Where else can we find you?

On a bit of a detox at the moment.
