Try something new in Bristol this weekend

Try something new in Bristol this weekend

Posted on: 09 Nov 2017

Like many cities in the UK, Bristol is a melting pot of different cultures, styles and events. We've all got our favourite night out, favourite genre of music and favourite place to go for a drink, but when was the last time you tried something new on a weekend?

You might be a big indie fan, but why not try a 9-piece instrumental funk collective at Leftbank on Friday? You spend every weekend at the clubs in Stoke's Croft, what about a trumpet jazz quarter at The Old Fish Market on Sunday for a change of pace? No need to spend hours looking around for something that takes your fancy - we've already done it for you. Below is a list of some of the best and most unique events around Bristol this weekend.

Wasabi @ Leftbank - 9pm on Friday 10th November

Bristol-based Wasabi are a 9-piece instrumental funk collective that specialise in combining high-energy tunes with accomplished musicianship, creating a vibrant atmosphere wherever they play. Made up of drums, percussion, keys, bass, guitar, alto, trumpet, tenor and baritone and trombone, you won't know who to watch as Wasabi put a smile on your face before you've realised it's there. At just £3 on the door this certainly isn't one to be missed.

Arnolfini Late: DEBUNK @ The Arnolfini - 7pm on Friday 10th November

Best known for their gallery exhibitions and performance art, The Arnolfini also hosts evening events from time to time, the latest coming in the form of DEBUNK. Bringing together live music, dance, DJ sets and more, artists will come together to create an experimental evening of performance influenced by club culture. industry and architecture. The impressive variety on offer at DEBUNK makes it a fantastic recommendation for anyone looking to discover something fresh this weekend.

Jyotsna Srikanth's Bangalore Dreams @ The Canteen - 10.30pm on Saturday 11th November

Jyotska Srikanth's impressive violin repertoire has earned her international acclaim

Remember the last time you went to watch a blend of Indian and Western music performed by one of India's most widely acclaimed violinists? Neither do I. Jyotsna Srikanth's musical career is littered with impressive accomplishments, including playing under composers on hundreds of Indian film releases, producing music scores for National Geographic and Discovery, and performing at the BBC Proms. She arrives at Bristol's Canteen while touring her Bangalore Dreams show, and entry is free - by far the best opportunity of the weekend to experience something truly unique without breaking the bank.

Andy Hague's Double Standards @ The Old Fish Market - 7pm, Sunday 12th November

Trumpeter Andy Hague fronts a fantastic band along with Jim Blomfield on piano, Riaan Vosloo on bass and Andy Tween on drums to see you through Sunday evening with an expert showing of live jazz. Located in Bristol's Old Town, Hague's band take over the Old Fish Market from 7pm for an evening of smooth jazz played by accomplished musicians, providing you with a welcome break from the pulsating bass of the clubs or the stress of having to navigate your way up and down Park Street.

Waistman Weeklies @ The Lanes - 5.30pm on Sunday 12th November

So Sunday morning has inevitably rolled around. You can barely see and have no idea what happened last night. Or Friday night for that matter. Luckily you've got the whole day to recover, but you've got a bit of steam left and feel like getting out of the house and squeezing those last few drops out of the weekend before you go back to work. Step in Waistman Weeklies - a games session hosted by The Lanes that pits punters against eachother on popular arcade games including Super Mario and Mortal Kombat. A perfect way to draw the weekend to a close - nursing a cold pint and rinsing your mates on Street Fighter.
