Welsh National Opera brings three acclaimed shows to Bristol's Hippodrome this November

Posted on: 30 Oct 2017

The Welsh National Opera Company arrives in Bristol for the first of three shows on Wednesday 15th November 2017. Taking place at the Hippodrome, audiences will be treated to performances of Eugene Onegin, From the House of the Dead, and Die Fledermaus.

The week opens with an adaptation of Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin - set in early 19th-century St Petersburg, the story follows the cynical protagonist as he rejects the romantic advances of a young country girl, before later coming to regret his actions and feeling the string of rejection himself. Considered one of the great Russian operas, Tchaikovsky's music reflects the atmosphere and setting of the period and the complex emotional range of the characters.

Tickets for Eugene Onegin on Wednesday 15th November start at £18.90 (incl. booking fee) and can be bought here.

The second of the three shows is David Pountney's From the House of the Dead. In the form of a compelling collage of prison inmates' stories as to why they ended up in jail, each individual story in the performance explores the extremes people will go to when situations arise, be it on the side of right or wrong. Both music and libretto of the original were based on the recollection of Dostoyevsky himself, who was only narrowly spared being put in front of a firing squad after a last-minute intervention from the Tsar.

Tickets for From the House of the Dead on Thursday 16th November start at £18.90 (incl. booking fee) and can be bought here.

The final WNO performances of the month see Johann Strauss II's Die Fledermaus on the Hippodrome stage. Set for two dates - a 7.15pm performance on Friday 17th November and a 4pm show on Saturday 18th - the cast includes Judith Howarth and Paul Charles Clarke, fresh from their recent leading roles in the WNO performance of Madame Butterfly in summer.

Tickets for Die Fledermaus On Friday 17th & Saturday 18th November start at £18.90 (incl. booking fee) and can be bought here.

Actor Steve Speirs (Extras, Stella) has recently been pushing for new audiences to try the opera, with the belief that it really can be for everyone. Since joining the Welsh National Opera, Speirs has been keen to dispel the myth that it is exclusive to 'posh' audiences with a new video campaign to attract some first-timers to see what the opera is really about.
