The star cast includes the likes of Joe Pasquale as Wishee Washee, Hayley Tamaddon as Princess Jasmine and Marti Pellow as evil sorcerer Abanazar. We went behind the scenes at the recent photo call, to talk all things panto, production and performance as well as what makes The Hippodrome such a special venue for the city.

The stars of Aladdin

We have been given exclusive information on the production of this year’s pantomime and what special effects are sure to make it a very unforgettable show. Flying carpets, dragons, huge gorillas and snakes are just a hint of what is in store for the audience…

Comedian Joe Pasquale, who plays the character Wishee Washee, first performed in Aladdin 20 years ago, and more recently in 2015. We asked how modern pantomimes differ from those of his past.

“20 years ago we were still throwing sweets out at the audience! Technology has arrived, we’ve now got 3D, flying carpets which is not good for me as I’ll be spinning round and round and all these seven year olds will have memories of Wishee Washee throwing up on their heads!” He jokes.

A frequent performer at the Hippodrome, he is a staple figure to the venues history as an iconic building for theatre, music, and stand-up comedy.

“I’ve been to Bristol and played the Hippodrome many times before. Considering it’s such a large theatre, it’s a very intimate one as well. A great room for comedy!” He says.

A great room, it is. Full of production potential that excites the mind of the visionary behind the pantomime, Ed Curtis.

Ed, who is the creative director, took the time to tell us about the production of this year’s show, and how truly unique it is going to be.

“This year’s special because we’ve wanted to marry the silliness of Joe and all of his fantastic comedy with the musical parries of someone like Marti.

Bringing him to the table adds a whole new take on how their parts are received by the audience. Then to marry that with West End production values, like our special effects such as our flying carpet which is particular showpiece moment of the show.

We also added and developed the story so we have a huge King Kong Gorilla that fills the stage to deliver the prophecy to Aladdin and the lamp and also a snake that flies over the audience!”

Wow. The audience is in for a treat, the show will be a viewing experience like no other, taking interactive pantomime to another level.

Gone are the days of sweet-throwing, for Aladdin promises to be a truly visual and comical delight, one that the whole family will enjoy.
