Watershed to host 25th anniversary screening of Ghostwatch with Live Q&A

Posted on: 21 Sep 2017

As part of the upcoming Bristol Horror Con 2017, the Watershed will be hosting an exclusive screening of the controversial 1992 film Ghostwatch, complete with a live Q&A with its creator Stephen Volk, on Friday 13th October at 5.45pm.

Ghostwatch caused a huge stir following its solitary airing in October 1992.

BBC1 first aired the mockumentary-style Ghostwatch on Halloween in 1992 and sparked a huge backlash from disturbed viewers who believed the film's events - including the murder of popular Blue Peter presenter Sarah Greene - to have really happened. Alongside Greene, Ghostwatch featured a strong cast that also included the likes of TV legend Michael Parkinson and Red Dwarf's Craig Charles.

Never again screened on TV in the UK, the film drew more than 30,000 phone calls from distressed viewers to the BBC switchboard in under an hour. The rare screening at Watershed cinema will be followed by a Q&A with Ghostwatch creator Stephen Volk, led by award-winning writer, critic and journalist Kim Newman.

"Welcome to the original Fake News!" says Volk. "I remain as proud of writing Ghostwatch as I was when it first aired on BBC1 on that infamous Halloween night in 1992. It has both given people sleepless nights and made them want to make horror films, as well as spawning a whole subgenre of mockumentary drama. If you haven't experienced it, or are still traumatised, come and see the programme that terrified the nation!"

The screening is being held as a pre-event for Bristol Horror Con 2017, which takes place at the Hilton Doubletree on Saturday 14th October.
