Ping-Pong Wednesdays at The Volunteer Tavern in Bristol

The pub, nestled behind the back of Bristol’s Cabot Circus, has unveiled its timetable for the forthcoming summer evenings, with the ping-pong-centric Wednesday evenings the pick of the bunch.

In a fallow year for international football tournaments and with the Lions stuttering as they are in New Zealand, this sporting summer, with Wimbledon on the horizon, is looking like it is going to be all about tennis – and the good folks at The Volunteer Tavern are well aware of this and the propensity of the Great British public to get involved.

They are also, however, aware of the effort required to get dressed up in whites and get out on court and have thus dreamt up the ultimate solution – table tennis! On Wednesday evenings throughout summer, the garden of The Volly will be full of, erm, volleys, drop shots and all of the other shots comprising the arsenal of the top quality ping-pong player.

The table in the pub’s renowned beer garden will welcome play of all abilities, as all-encompassing free play is succeeded by a tournament of a slightly increased intensity.

As well as injecting hump day with a bit of bounce, both Monday and Sunday are marked by Monday Curry Club and Funday Sunday, which keep the long, warm weeks ticking over.

These do little to distract from the pub’s quality offerings of food and drink, serving food both as traditional as befits their grade II listed walls, and more modern, vegan-friendly dishes.

A fierce commitment to local produce informs their dishes, with all of the meat bought from Bristol suppliers, including JD Brittan, the city's oldest independent butcher. The artwork which decorates the interior is similarly-sourced, having been provided by indigenous artist Laura Cramer.

This attitude drips into their liquid offerings too, with the bar-full of rotating real ales provided by Bristol-based brewers like Arbor Ales, Wickwar Brewery and Wiper and True. Also featuring a selection of fine wines and spirits, the alcohol on offer allows for adequate accompaniment to the food, or enough to justify the trip on its own.

Whilst walk-ins are accepted, booking ahead is encouraged to avoid disappointment, particularly on Sundays - it appears the word is well and truly out about this one! To do so, give them a bell on 0117 955 8498 or visit www.volunteertavern.co.uk.
