The first taste of Pelico – a new Bristol business

The new venture, established recently by UWE students, aims to deliver nutritious meals to office workers and to increase the quality of fast food. Give Pelico a go!

The student diet can often leave plenty to be desired. With undergraduates commonly lacking the culinary acumen or the necessary impetus to cook up a storm, menus in halls and second year houses continually consist of microwave meals and beans on toast.

This was certainly the case with Leyth Hampshire, Alex Gatehouse and Nick Secrett, a trio of UWE students, who noted the poor quality of the food being consumed on campus and took it upon themselves to improve it. To this end, they began preparing meals for classmates and delivering them to their doors. So successful was this practice that they expanded to offices in Redcliffe and have started catering to nearby office workers, within a one-mile radius - see bottom of page.

We liked the sound of this. So we checked it out for ourselves, ordering a number of dishes from their daily menu to our offices, via their easy-to-use website. These arrived within half an hour of ordering (hand-delivered by Leyth himself) and hadn’t suffered for their journey.

First up is the Thai green curry. Deliciously authentic and obviously prepared freshly, there is a generous mix of vegetables including perfectly cooked new potatoes and vibrant strands of red pepper. Seasoned well, and packing a light yet noticeable spicy punch, the Thai green curry is definitely something we would order again - a perfect option for lunch or dinner.

The Buddha burger is a tightly packed bun sandwiching a generous helping of halloumi and a chickpea patty which oozed Middle Eastern spices and flavours with each mouthful. A wholesome and relatively healthy option for a working lunch.

Pelico’s take on the famous Japanese katsu curry is very different to as expected, with the ingredients used compliment each other and creating a beautiful dish. Jam-packed with flavour and nutrition, this is a robust and healthy meal. The sauces play nicely with the generous amount of crispy breaded chicken laid  atop the Chinese spiced rice which works better than your common bland sticky white rice. For the price you pay and the quality you receive this choice really is a no brainer.

The BBQ jerk burrito wraps a composite of sticky rice, chipotle ‘slaw and chicken inside a soft, doughy tortilla, nicely adorned with sweet sauces and packing a serious punch of heat.

And finally, the Golden Italian sandwich comes inside a warm, chewy ciabatta (just how they should be), with the proven combination of pesto, mozzarella and tomato working especially well to coat the chicken. A real winner.

Delivered swiftly and for a price more than reasonable for a working lunch, this service is of a quality reflective of the food it serves – and one which we will be using again soon.
