Rhubarb Jumble - Born out of a passion for all things vintage

A couple of weeks ago, I was planning my trip to Lisbon and I checked the weather forecast and saw that it was going to be 26 degrees! Following our gloomy spring, I’d not yet done any shopping for summer clothes. Being a little short on time, I knew I didn’t want to trail around loads of shops waiting for inspiration to strike and that I wanted a really calm and personal shopping experience.

I headed to Rhubarb Jumble on North Street. I love the selection of clothes in Rhubarb Jumble because there are clothes from a wide range of vintage periods, everything is high quality, in great condition, and always smells lovely and clean (not always the case with vintage clothing!). There’s also a comprehensive range of sizes so there’ll be something to suit everyone.

If you’re looking for an outfit for a special occasion, buying vintage is the perfect way to make sure you won’t be wearing the same outfit as someone else. One of my previous purchases from Rhubarb Jumble is a handmade dress from the 1950’s. It’s beautifully made and I’ve worn it to several weddings and dinner events.

On the day I visited, the lovely Lyzi www.beinglittle.co.uk was working and after a little bit of chatting about what I wanted, what styles suit my shape and what colours would look best on me, Lyzi helped me pick out a selection of cotton dresses to try. It was great to have someone to give me some feedback on how the dresses looked, and what worked and what didn’t. I could very happily have bought about five dresses, but managed to whittle it down to just one; a red strappy dress from the 80’s with a smocked back (ensures a brilliant fit and very comfortable for wearing on the plane, or for after eating lots of Portuguese custard tarts) and wide straps (perfect for wearing on or off the shoulder). It also has side seams in the skirt which mean I can add in pockets. I love it and wore it several times on holiday, and I’m waiting for the sun to return here so I can wear it again.
