The Flipside Cocktail Carnival will take place across this bank holiday weekend at the bar on Whiteladies Road, with profits going towards a university research project.

Flippin’ marvellous! The good folk at Flipside Cocktail Club are renowned for their mixing capabilities and the sense of fun with which they fill their drinks, but it appears that this time they have ‘outflipped’ themselves.

Over this bank holiday weekend (26th-28th May), the bar atop Whiteladies Road are hosting three days of delicious drinks and carnival carnage – all in support of a good cause. Money raised from the event will help to fund the university project of student Emily Cavill, who is researching into saving an endangered species – the Seychelles Magpie Robin, pictured below.

This work involves sequencing a portion of the genome in order to examine the genetic variability within the population. There are only 280 of these magnificent birds worldwide, found on only 5 of the 115 Seychelles islands, and the species is considered one of the rarest birds in the world.

There is already a conservation program in place that has led to the dramatic increase in numbers over the last 20 years, but the current population is still struggling. It is thought the struggle is due to the effects of inbreeding. I will be looking at the genetic impact this severe inbreeding has had on the existing birds, and the best way to overcome it when establishing new populations!

Never ones to leave the ‘fun’ out of ‘fundraising’, Flipside is putting on a weekend of carnival games and music. It will, quite literally, be all the fun of the fair – as FAIR. drinks are sponsoring the event. As such, the bar will be stocked with a decadent range of spirits including quinoa vodka and juniper gin.

The Flipside Cocktail Carnival will take place between the 27th-29th May at Flipside Cocktail Club. Donate to Emily's campaign here.
