Women’s Cricket World Cup 2017 launches in Bristol

Posted on: 08 Mar 2017

Earlier today at Cabot Circus, Marvin Rees was joined by England internationals Alex Hartley and Tammy Beaumont, along with Gloucestershire Cricket chief executive Will Brown and Fi Hance, Cabinet Member for City Health and Wellbeing, to launch the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup countdown.

To mark the coming of the tournament a countdown clock was unveiled on the ground floor of Cabot Circus showing down to the second just how long we have to wait for this festival of sport to hit Bristol.

Bristol will host 6 group-stage games, 3 of which will feature England, and also host one of the two semi-final games. The tournament itself kicks off at our own Brightside Ground on Saturday 24th June as New Zealand face Sri Lanka.

Speaking to 365Bristol at the launch, Marvin Rees, Bristol’s Mayor, commented “I think having the women’s world cup here is fantastic. It’s a world class event with a huge profile and a fantastic example of sport in general - and women in sport in particular - and hopefully that encourages participation. People will be in close proximity to elite athletes. I want to see people with talent getting the opportunity to develop their talent and become world class athletes. It doesn’t happen by accident. The profile that something like this brings is wonderful.”

Also speaking with us at the event were two current England internationals Alex Hartley and Tammy Beaumont. They were very keen to promote not only women’s cricket, but getting women of all ages active.

Tammy Beaumont: “It’s not just about us getting more women or girls into cricket; it’s about every school getting their girls into sport so that we can all gain from it.”

Alex Hartley: “We need to get women into sport. I would advise girls to play any sport that is available to them. Football, hockey, netball, cricket and play that for as long as you can, then pick your favourite.”

Tammy: “We would love a future England women’s cricket captain to come and watch us play at Bristol. There’s more to it than that though, we need to get women active and promote being active as a woman and if that’s sport or going to a Zumba class then great!”
