The original Love Saves The Day parties were thrown by the late David Mancuso in New York’s iconic venue The Loft at the outset of the 1970s. Ensuring that the legacy of the maverick disc jockey (who passed away in November last year) remains lovingly preserved, organisers of the six-year-old Bristol festival of the same name have gone to great lengths to perpetuate the ideals of equality and inclusivity for which he stood.

Drawing extensively from an eclectic pool of genres, what is particularly notable about 2017’s bill is its gender equality with a very even balance struck between male and female artists - something that should not be taken for granted, should it Reading Festival?

We already knew that Sunday’s headliners would be Kiwi reggae dons Fat Freddy’s Drop, and a series of thinly-veiled clues had hinted heavily at the inclusion of Fatima Yamaha (below), Bicep, D Double E, My Nu Leng and TQD - so it is not surprise to see all of them performing variously across the weekend.

Fatima Yamaha

Saturday, as it tends to, sees a glut of soul-infused pop music combined with some quality cuts of deep house. Headlining the main stage are Swedish quartet Little Dragon, who have collaborated with the likes of Gorillaz, Kaytranada and SBTRKT, whilst piquing ears of their own accord with celebrated albums Ritual Union, Machine Dreams and 2014’s Nabuma Rubberband.

Their artful blend of electronic pop is a great shout to occupy the berth filled in 2016 by Hot Chip, with prime support this year coming from Sound of 2016 nominees NAO and Mura Masa. This is where Mr Yamaha will be playing his outrageous live set, alongside  funky heroes Crazy P. Infinitely-moveable local trio Elder Island get a deserved nod from the organisers, who have awarded them the opening spot.

Futureboogie’s curation of the Brouhaha stage looks like a real turn-up, with a stellar stream of top, top DJs, all of whom lend themselves incredibly well to a sunny day. Much-loved Dutch selector Hunee tops this bill, making a welcome return to the South West after taking the roof off Just Jack’s 10th birthday party at Motion last year. Alongside him are the battle-wizened Move D and junior wave-maker Palms Trax, the Lobster Theremin-signee having been tipped for the top after a tremendous 2016. Futureboogie bossmans Dave Harvey and Christophe will also spin some funk earlier in the day.

Elsewhere, highlights come in the form of Bicep’s headlining of the Just Jack-curated Paradiso tent after Job Jobse and Andrew Weatherall, Jamie Jones closing out Cloud 9, and slots for Addison Groove and DJ Die at The Dance Off.

Those hoping for a bit of hush to rest a heavy head will find little respite on the Sunday, with the festival taking its traditional turn towards the jungly, the grimy and the dubby, a trend attested to by the showing of Toddla T and his authority on all of these genres.

Appearing below Fat Freddy’s Drop on the main stage are poet Kate Tempest (below), boisterous producer Shy FX and hotly-tipped grime upstart AJ Tracey.

One of the genre’s elder statesmen Kano headlines the Cloud 9 (this time put on by The Blast) ahead of D Double E, and bass-heavy bursts from My Nu Leng and TQD, while Novelist reps it further below BadBadNotGood on Crack Magazine’s Paradiso stint. Local legends Sherwood and Pinch will bring some dubstep to Brouhaha late on, closing out the festival like only they can.
