Bristol's Live Picks: 12th - 19th December

Posted on: 12 Dec 2016

This week sees the return of graceful age to Bristol, with the live performances of several acts who rose to prominence in decades past, in genres spanning indie, r&b and deep house. Feast your ears.

Kula Shaker - O2 Academy, 13.12

Kula Shaker

With a nod to the eastern-influenced experimentation of George Harrison, Kula Shaker borrowed Indian instrumentation and Sanskrit lyrics to infuse their own swirling, psychedelic guitars, in so doing creating the most divisive sound of the immediately post-Britpop era. Whilst Crispian Mills and his manc gang collected praise and derision in equal measure, what was indisputable was the band’s success, with their first LP K growing to be the fastest-selling British debut album since Elastica’s bow the year before. Following two decades which saw the band break and then make up and produce several more albums, they released the sequel K2.0, of which their latest UK tour comes in support.

Colours - The Love Inn, 14.12

Colours

In their own words, Colours are ‘a Bristol-based collective and monthly party showcasing quality underground house music from around the world’, and with previous guests as eclectically-sourced as Fabio Monesi, Fouk and Lakuti they emphatically live up to this billing. Their take-over of the Love Inn on Wednesday, where their residents playing alongside special guest DJ Faro, will see them round off the year in style.

The Coral - O2 Academy, 15.12

The Coral

Drawing from influences as disparate as ska, Motown and country music, The Coral have been able to sculpt pop songs as enduring as ‘Dreaming Of You’ and ‘In The Morning’, as such being credited with leading the noughties revival of the British guitar group. Pairing the dulcet tones of Ian Skelly with the trio of guitars led by Bill Ryder-Jones, the group have maintained through the decade with the favour of fans and critics alike. They will stop for a night at our O2 Academy on their latest nationwide tour, which comes in support of their excellent eighth album Distance Inbetween, released earlier this year.

ANTS - Motion, 16.12

Joris Voorn

The invasion of ANTS is set to infest Motion on Saturday, bringing with them a collection of the choicest names in deep, deep house. Renowned for throwing some of the most relaxed and revered parties in Ibiza, their In:Motion residency doesn’t disappoint. Dutch DJ Joris Voorn (pictured), whose pared-down productions have had heads nodding and toes tapping since his emergence nearly 20 years ago, sits atop a bill propped up by DJ Tennis, Andrea Oliva, Francisco Alandes and Yotto.

Three undergraduate years at UoB were more than ample time for Bristol (as it inevitably does) to get under his skin, and so here he remains: reporting, as Assistant Editor, on the cultural happenings which so infatuated him with the city.
