The Best Food Challenges in Bristol

Posted on: 29 Nov 2016

Competitive eating around the world has grown into a phenomenon and Bristol has many a place to chow down on some mammoth meals and scorching dishes. Ever since Man vs. Food blessed our screens with Adam Richman devouring huge portions we seem to be obsessed with eating challenges.

Here are just some of the best eating challenges in Bristol. If you can finish any of these, I really do tip my hat to you.

The Ashville – 72oz Steak Challenge

The Asheville - 72oz Steak Challenge

Tipping the scale at a gargantuan 72oz, the T-Bone steak will be grilled to perfection and served alongside triple cooked chips, mushrooms, salad, vegetables, garlic toast, onion rings and both peppercorn and béarnaise sauce. It's all washed down with a pint!

The challenge still stands undefeated, and if you can finish this monster the meal is free! If you can’t finish it, you feel the wrath of the £83 bill.

Atomic Burger – The Fallout Burger

Atomic Burger - Fallout Challenge

Atomic Burger honestly discourages anyone from taking on this burger challenge. It’s huge, hot and really tough to complete. The Fallout is a triple meal and costs £25 per challenge. The burger consists of:

Triple 6oz beef, chicken or veggie burger, triple American cheese, triple onion ring, triple Fallout Sauce (Seriously hot, they aren’t kidding), triple portion of chilli fries.

You have 45 minutes to complete and if you finish the challenge you get a free, Survivor T-Shirt. If you fail, you receive a free Victim T-Shirt.

Pranj’s – The Thursday Chicken Wing Challenge

Pranj's Bar - Thursday Chicken Wing Challenge

One of the newer challenges on Bristol’s gluttony list, Pranj’s chicken wing challenge consists of 50 chicken wings and the desire to succeed. You have one hour to complete the challenge. There has seen several people attempt and fail this; however there has been one winner so far.

Current record stands at all chicken wings completed in 57:30. If you are able to complete this you are gifted a free t-shirt. With it only costing £10 on Thursday’s this is quite a bargain too.

Grillstock – The Grand Champion

Grillstock - The Grand Champion

This carnivorous challenge from Grillstock is sure to test the best competitive eater to their limits. Costing £45 this challenge has seen many people hit the dreaded ‘meat sweats’ and have to give up.

Finish a plate of chicken, brisket, pulled pork and ribs, along with hot dog, fries, slaw, pickles, cornbread, BBQ beans, brisket chilli and burnt ends and you’ll be rewarded with a t-shirt and a free bottle of Grillstock’s own BBQ sauce. However you have only one hour to beat this absolute demon! The challenge has recently had some added extras and is now the entire menu on a plate.

The Hobgoblin Pub – The Kraken

The Hobgoblin - the Kraken Challenge

This burger challenge really isn’t one for the faint hearted. Naming a burger after something as infamous as The Kraken shows just how much The Hobgoblin Pub means business.

The challenge costs £25 and you have to manage to get your way through a triple bypass burger (3 7oz burgers, 2 hash browns, a load of pulled pork and cheese), 15 chicken wings, a huge portion of dirty, dirty fries and a big pile of coleslaw, all with additional sauces.

If you can manage this in less than 45 minutes, you will become only the second person to complete this challenge, and be rewarded with a free t-shirt, a pint and your name on the wall of fame. Loose however, and you shall be branded on the wall of shame!

Harry’s Café at Fowlers – Sunday Breakfast Challenge

Harrys Cafe at Fowlers - Sunday Breakfast

This popular challenge at one of Bristol’s most iconic businesses on Bath Road makes a normal fry-up look miniscule. Big motorcycles and even bigger breakfasts are in order here!

Hand over £15 and one hour of your life and you can attempt to try and tackle - 6 sausages, 6 eggs, 6 rashers of bacon, 6 hash browns, 4 slices of bread and butter, 4 slices of toast and butter, 4 slices of fried bread, beans, tomatoes, mushrooms, chips and a soothing cup of tea to finish off.

The Green Man Pub – The Bear Grillz Challenge

The Green Man Pub – The Bear Grillz Challenge

This is one of the more inclusive challenges on our list. Not just one for the meat lovers the Green Man Pub also has a veggie challenge along with their mammoth burger challenge. However just because it’s vegetarian doesn’t make it any easier.

Costing £25 and with 30 minutes to complete you have to try and devour – A burger consisting of 10oz of trademark beef and pork, smoked and mature cheddar cheese, streaky bacon, glazed ham hock, black pudding. Outside the bun includes, chips, melted chilli cheese, BearBQ pulled pork, onion rings, apple and chilli coleslaw and to finish off a bit of grilled chorizo.

The veggie challenge consists of a burger with 10oz of trademark veg, a whole baked Camembert, garlic mushrooms, flame-grilled pineapple, red onion confit, refried beans and grilled peppers. Outside the bun consists of chips, mature and smoked cheddar, onion rings, apple and chilli coleslaw, chunky beetroot, balsamic rocket and halloumi fries.

Even typing all that made me a little full.

Good luck to anybody that wants to tackle any of these gargantuan challenges. If you want any more information on any of the dishes mentioned or on any of the locations, click the attached links and connect with the guys through their Facebook pages. Good luck!
