The Bristol Sports Report

Posted on: 16 Oct 2016

Not the greatest weekend of sports results in Bristol unless you are a Rovers fan; they came away with a 2-1 home victory over Gillingham and have started another unbeaten run that dates back to 27th September where they lost away at Sheffield United.

We are calling it early though that our golden girl Claudia Fragapane will leap through to the next round of Strictly Come Dancing. Some very brief weekend sports reports below:

Cardiff City 2 Bristol City 1

A Friday night trip over the bridge and with City flying high in The Championship and Cardiff onto manager 2 of the season after a dreadful start more would have been expected. I mean, at least a draw! Neil Warnock, now at the helm of Cardiff, specialises in relegation survival and managed to retain all 3 points with goals for Peter Whittington from the penalty spot - Cardiff's first league goal at home all season - and Sol Bamba on debut before Lee Tomlin slotted a screamer from 25 yards to reduce the deficit. Bobby Reid then managed to miss from a couple of yards late into the game, d'oh. 2-1 loss for Bristol City.

Upcoming fixtures in October include away trips to QPR (18th) and Barnsley (29th), and home game versus Blackburn (22nd) and Hull City in the EFL Cup (25th).

Bristol City

Bristol Rovers 2 Gillingham Town 1

Bristol Rovers move up to 8th place in Sky Bet League 1 after an injury time winner against Gillingham and with a game in hand are just one point off the play off spots. Gillingham took the lead after 62 minutes when some lax defending from a long throw let unmarked skipper Josh Wright put the visitors ahead. Chris Lines then played a nice one-two with Matty Taylor in the 82nd minute to level the scores before Rovers substitute Ellis Harrison volleyed home from the edge of the six yard box and seal the win.

Upcoming fixtures in October for Bristol Rovers are away trips to Milton Keynes Dons (18th) and Oldham Athletic (22nd) before a home game at The Memorial Stadium versus Peterborough (29th).

Bristol Rovers

Bristol Rugby 20 Cardiff Blues 33

And so it continues. Bristol Rugby notched a 7th loss from 7 games as they entered the first round of games in the European Challenge Cup. A 20-33 loss to Cardiff Blues included tries from Max Crumpton and Joe Joyce. Bristol were unlucky with a disallowed try for a double movement by scrum-half Rhodri Williams but they really must do better. A lot better.

Upcoming fixtures in October for Bristol Rugby include a short trip up the road to Bath in the European Challenge Cup on Thursday 20th before what is surely a must win fixture back in the Aviva Premiership against Sale on Sunday 30th October.

Bristol Rugby

Bristol Flyers 57 Sheffield Sharks 59

18-24 down at half-time, Bristol Flyers rallied and were very close to pushing he game into overtime only for Hameed Ali's last second shot to bounce off the rim. The form book really told today and with Sheffield 18 wins from 29 it really showed over Bristol's 8 from the same number. Flyers remain in 10th place just two points ahead of joint bottom Manchester Giants and Surrey Scorchers.

Upcoming fixtures are at home on Friday 21st October v Leicester Riders before the long trip up to Glasgow Rocks on Sunday 23rd October.
