10 Money-Saving Activities for the Summer Holidays in Bristol

10 Money-Saving Activities for the Summer Holidays in Bristol

Posted on: 25 Jul 2016

With the six weeks kicking off, chances are you're going to want to get the kids out of the house and treat them to a few days enjoying the sun (while it lasts) and engaging in a few of the myriad events and activities happening in and around Bristol.

On the other hand, we're also more than aware of the fact that in today's money-conscious, belt-tightening times, chances are you're going to need to be somewhat thrifty with the cashflow.

As reliable as a pair of comfy old slippers, here at 365Bristol we're on hand to offer a few suggestions of places to go and things to do that won't cost you an arm and leg but will keep the kids entertained.

Here's 10 of our top picks

Gromit Returns

Oh yes, Gromit's back from Monday 25 July. 18 versions of him in fact, displayed at a free exhibition at the Gromit Unleashed shop in Cribbs Causeway throughout the school holidays until 4th September.

Free football

Whisk the kids away from their iPads and Pokemon Go and get them out into the open getting physical and fit with free taster skills sessions at football clubs at Westfield FC, High Littlefield Recreation Ground and Yatton.

Make a Splash

You never know, the heatwave may well continue - in which case let the little 'uns splash around in the fountains in Millennium Square. The big screen there also advertises upcoming events, one of which is the Olympics from 6th August where children can watch and take part in many of the games.

Bike it

If you've got a bike, hop on it and take a cycle ride along the Bristol and Bath Railway Path to Warmley, where the kids will go absolutely ape over the Dr Who Tardis toilet. There's also a cafe for food and refreshments, while Warmley's Kingswood Heritage Museum is gratis for under 12s and a modest £3 for adults.

Fun Down on the Farm

Bristol is blessed with several farms that take you away from the crazy pace of everyday life. Community farms like St Werburghs, Windmill Hill City Farm, Hartcliffe Farm, Lawrence Weston Community Farm and Old Down Country Farm always have something going on that's either free or very cheap.

Terrific Tuesdays

The New Room at John Wesley's Chapel in the Horsefair is organising Colour and Craft sessions every Tuesday throughout the summer holidays. Starting on Tuesday 26 July from 10.30am to 3pm you'll be able to take part in plenty of fun, creative activities such as clay modelling, mug decoration and flag making.

Pack a Picnic

Everyone loves a picnic when the sun's out, so for price of a few ham sarnies, some Monster Munch and a few Scotch eggs you chomp to your heart's content and bask in the glorious rays at fabulous, beautiful spots like Victoria Park, Leigh Woods, Ashton Court, Oldbury Court and the stunning grounds of Blaise Castle

Bargain Movies

Vue in Cribbs Causeway will be presenting morning screenings of Zootropolis and Kung Fu Panda for an attractively pocket-friendly £1.99. Odeon on Union St will also be showing a range of kids flicks every morning for £1.50, so check their website regularly for more info.

Museums and Art Galleries

You can get into the majority of the city's art galleries and museums completely free (though you can make a small donation if you like). There's an ever-changing rotation of exhibitions and events at Bristol Museum and Art Gallery and Watershed, while the thoroughly delightful Story of Children's Television at M Shed run until 25 September.

Be a Bookworm

Another great ruse to get the kids away from the TV or Smartphone, Foyles bookshop in Cabot Circus will host Storybox 2016 until 14 August - a book festival for children and young adults that will (re)introduce kids to the joys of literature and books through a range of interactive, free events.
