The Government Inspector at The Alma Tavern Theatre in Bristol - 7-18 June 2016

Posted on: 07 Jun 2016

Corruption is rife in a small town, lost and forgotten in the heart of the vast Russian Empire.  But panic sets in when they discover that they are to be the subject of an undercover government inspection, and the Mayor and his cronies swiftly become victims of their own stupidity and greed.

Nikolai Gogol's masterpiece is one of the world's greatest comedies - bitingly satirical and absurdly funny, a dazzling blend of preposterous characters and frighteningly real situations. We should be able to laugh it off, if it weren't all so real. The performance, translated by Toby Hulse, is presented by Bristol Acting Academy.

Alma Tavern Theatre is steeped in culture and history and is actually the oldest pub theatre in Bristol. The venue opened in 1997 after it was converted from two separate function rooms into a small but perfectly formed black box theatre with 48 tiered seats. The dynamic and diverse programme of theatrical productions reflects the vibrant, eclectic nature of Bristol itself, and it continually proves itself to be one of the most inspiring, innovative and exciting theatres in, not just this city, but the whole of the UK.
