British artist Stuart Whipps presents Isle of Slingers at Bristol’s prestigious Spike Island from 9 July - 8 September 2016. Drawing together multiple strands of his previous work, it’s his most comprehensive exhibition to date.

The exhibition takes the form of a film alongside connected objects, drawings and photographs. The consideration of photography and drawing as a reductive process lies at the heart of the exhibition, which draws out a complex web of intertwined narratives from single images, objects or motifs.

Stuart Whipps’ work over the past ten years has been neatly combined and helped to influence what is, in reality, an almost entirely new exhibition. His many disparate narratives have been juxtaposed in this impressive culmination of a decade’s worth of varying influences. It is the first time that said narratives will have been brought together for a single exhibition and includes work made around a concrete sculpture garden in Mexico, the remnants of the Scottish oil industry, a ballet company from 1933 and the theft of flowers from a garden in north Wales.

The structural principle of the exhibition is based around three types of stone that Stuart has researched in order for them to help inform his unexpected narratives: Portland stone, slate and shale. These are colour coded to guide the viewer. A huge amount of archival information photographs and objects trace these stories, while the film at the heart of it tries to draw out the connections between them.
