Liam O'Keefe Fundraising Rugby Day in Bristol

Posted on: 06 May 2016

On Sunday 8 May 2016, St Mary’s Old Boys RFC in Bristol will host three games of rugby in honour of and to raise money for Liam O’Keefe. The former Saints captain suffered a serious neck injury during a game in 2015 and the whole of the Bristol rugby community has come together to lend support.

The Clubhouse will be open at 11:00am. The first game kicks off at 1:00pm and will be Bristol Wanderers (a team comprising ex-Bristol players) versus a Combination Veterans XV, in what promises to be an entertaining game. The game will be refereed by prominent Bristol referee Steve Leyshon. There are some terrible rumours going around that a certain owner of 365 Bristol has been selected for the Vets team. Should be entertaining...

The second game kicks off at 2:30pm. This is a resurrection of an Under 17’s cup final game played 10 years ago between St Mary’s and Old Redcliffians. The game will be refereed by well-known Bristol referee Ivor Sobey, who was in charge of the cup final game 10 years ago.

After this game, St. Mary’s chairman, Peter Phelps, will give a presentation to Saints’ Ladies in recognition of their success in winning the South West North National 2 title.

The last game will kick off at 4:30pm. This will be a St Mary’s Chairman’s and President’s XV versus a Combination XV. In the first half the Combination XV will comprise 15 representatives from the Gloucester and Somerset Leagues and will be captained by Will Harding (Saracens). The second half Combination XV will comprise of players from across the combination and will be captained by Dan Cox (Cleve).

After the last game there will be an auction and live music in the clubhouse. Amongst the auction items are: a current England shirt signed by the full England squad and donated by England stars Billy and Mako Vunipola; signed shirts from Saracens, Wasps, Bath and Bristol, and rugby memorabilia donated by England Captains Martin Johnson and Lewis Moody. The auctioneer will be Dr. David Rowland.

Throughout the day there will be the usual excellent food from JJ Catering and drink available at the bar. In addition Kevin Hickory will hold a hog roast. There will also be a mini fair ground and ice cream van in attendance to help make this a day for all the family.

Finally, and by no means least, Liam has promised to attend. Let’s show him our support in his fight to recover from his injury.
