Avon Gorge - The Big Spring Beach Clean 2016
Posted on: 29 Mar 2016Join a huge group of volunteers as the great community of Bristol comes together to give one of our most prized possessions a facelift. From 9am on Saturday 16th April 2016, Avon Gorge will be given the Big Spring Beach Clean treatment, along with hundreds of other locations around the UK.
Storm Imogen recently swept through the UK, battering the coastline with gale force winds and colossal waves; dumping tonnes of marine litter along the coastline. Marine litter is now one of the biggest threats to the health and sustainability of our marine ecosystem. In Bristol, we’re proud of our rich maritime heritage and our proximity to both the river and the sea enables us to enjoy some great attractions and activities, not to mention some spectacular views.
That’s why it’s important we help maintain our beaches and waterways, especially in the wake of a large storm. The Big Spring Beach Clean is the biggest single community beach clean effort in the UK, uniting 7,000 grassroots volunteers to tackle the marine litter crisis in over 200 locations across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Bristol’s own Spoke & Stringer – the excellent bar/restaurant and ride-culture shop on the Harbourside – is calling for community volunteers to join the Avon Gorge Big Spring Beach Clean on Saturday 16th April 2016 from 9am. No registration is necessary, just meet at the top of the towpath and ask for Giles! (If you’re not entirely sure where that is we’d suggest entering ‘1 Rownham Hill’ into Google Maps or your sat nav. This will get you to the rough location then just head towards the river from there, you can't miss the spot.)
