Bristol Sports report for 16 August 2014

Posted on: 18 Aug 2014

Loads of sport last weekend and well done to all of the Bristol ladies representing the victorius Women's World Cup Rugby team in Paris. The main winner this weekend though was the Impact Rugby Charity who raised over £10,000 for The Jessie May Trust and Children's Hospice South West. Pictured above are the victorious purple team.

Bristol City 2 Colchester United 1

Despite the final results service announcing that Bristol Rovers had beaten Colchester we can confirm it was definitely Bristol City and they are now sitting joint top of Sky Bet League 1 alongside Chesterfield, Crawley Town and Fleetwood Town all of whom have 6 points from their two fixtures.

Colchester opened the scoring in the 9th minute when George Moncur benefited from Freddie Sears chasing a ball that most would have left for a goal kick. The cross found Sean Clohessy who teed up Moncur to slot home from close range. The score remained 1-0 until half time but within a minute of the restart Aaron Wilbraham grabbed his second goal in two starts as he connected with Greg Cunningham’s low cross for the equaliser. In the 68th minute it was Aaron Wilbraham again on the scoresheet with his header making sure all 3 points stayed at Ashton Gate. On Tuesday 19th August Bristol City face Leyton Orient at home. Orient won 3-1 on the weekend away to Oldham Athletic and are one of the favourites for promotion this season.

Altrincham 2 Bristol Rovers 1

An extremely disappointing performance by Bristol Rovers who have managed just a single point from their 3 Vanarama Conference fixtures so far. The 2-1 loss at Altrincham seems to have been the final straw for Geoff Dunford who this morning announced his resignation from the board of directors.

Damien Reeves put Altrincham ahead 1-0 after 18 minutes and despite Rovers controlling possession an own goal by Mark McChrystal put them 2-0 down before Lee Mansell scored a consolation goal in the 75th minute to at least open up Bristol Rovers' goal account in the conference. An 89th minute dismissal of Stuart Sinclair made a bad day away even worse. Bristol Rovers need to turn their season round and quick. Their 4th game is at home to AFC Telford this Saturday 23rd August. Win needed.

Impact Charity Rugby Match at Bristol Barbarians Rugby Club

Purple (Jessie May Trust) 19 Green (Children’s Hospice South West) 10

Over 700 people turned up to support the two fantastic charities and the Purple team edged the Green team by 19-10 in what was a tremendous game.

Green’s opened the scoring with Gio Marchese nipping in by the right touchline after quick hands from Messr’s Abbott, Brogden and Payne. Purple’s came back quickly with Tom Marsh launching himself through the scrambling green defense for a 5-5 half time score. Into the second half and the green team went ahead again after taking a quick penalty and releasing Olly Slym to score 10 yards to the left of the posts. Conversion missed and the score moved up to 10-5. The purples though really picked up their game and spent long periods attacking the green try line.

Some outstanding defence kept them at bay for 10 minutes before James Anderson managed to crash through under the posts and with Phil Hodder adding the conversion purples led 12-10. Not long afterwards purples were away again and Lee Chidgey broke down the blind side and drew the fullback before offloading to Phil Hodder for the 3rd purple try. His conversion made it 19-10 to purples and with just 3 minutes remaining that conversion had sealed the victory.

An awesome game and even better news is that the final total raised was £10,219. Bristol Barbarians look forward to seeing lots of the charity players at training this Tuesday evening from 7pm at their ground on Norton Lane, Whitchurch, BS14 0BT.

Bristol Rugby 19 Newport Gwent Dragons 34

Bristol Rugby went down at Clifton RFC in their re-arranged friendly against Newport Gwent Dragons on Saturday. The Bristol tries came from Jack O’Connell, Luke Eves and a penalty try with Adrian Jarvis successful with 2 conversions.

Finally, well done to St Bernadettes Rugby Club for winning the Ashley Down rugby tournament on the weekend. Also congratulations to Craig Bryson on winning man of the tournament, great to see the old Bristol Barbarian doing so well with our friends at Bernadettes.
